Forest of the Unknowable Ones

The Forest of the Unknowable Ones is a deep, primeval forest at the northwest of the continent of Eale in the world of the Messengers. It is so named because it is host to many Messengers, known locally as the Unknowable Ones. Though many in the surrounding areas shun the places as dangerous and haunted, some have settled there for a variety of reasons: to study the Unknowable Ones, to worship them, to petition them for aid and magical help... or to attempt to trap them and steal their powers.

Geography

The Forest of the Unknowable Ones is a several-thousand-square-kilometer forest of mixed deciduous and evergreen trees. It begins to the east of the shores of the Northern Sea as gentle rounded foothills and broad plateaus, becoming gradually steeper until they reach the slopes of the Vanar Mountains.   Though largely heavily forested, “islands” of cleared ground can be found throughout. Some are natural meadows, especially in areas where exposed rock prevents the ready growth of large trees; others are manmade, to permit a limited amount of agriculture by the human inhabitants. Meadow valleys and clearings are more common on the mountain slopes than on the foothills and plateaus, as the combination of increased altitude and rocky ground result in less dense forest.   The Erde, Danze, Meln, and Ashe rivers are the main waterways of the Forest. Smaller rivers and numerous lakes, including tarns in the mountains, dot the landscape.   Despite the name, the entire western side of the Vanar Mountains is considered part of the Forest of the Unknowable Ones, including the areas that are patchily-forested and unforested toward the peaks. The eastern side of the mountains are considered part of the nation of Enzia, though they are largely unsettled.   The Forest has a cool temperate climate with regular precipitation throughout the year. Snow in the winter is very common.

Fauna & Flora

Plants

The foothills and plateaus of the Forest boast mixed forest of both coniferous and deciduous trees: pine, fir, and spruce; beech, oak, alder, birch, and ash. In these locations, the forest is sufficiently thick as to make the interior dim, even dark; in those places, undergrowth is minimal, restricted primarily to mosses and ferns. Brush and grasses of various kinds are present in and near meadows, roads, and lakes.
