Demographics

The population is largely human (37%), with smaller numbers of elves (20%), dwarves (18%), halflings (10%) and other races (15%)

Government

The running of The Hovel has been taken up by Duke Heartfelt who has created a council made up of notable members of the community. Through this council, residents can bring their concerns to Duke Heartfelt directly.

Defences

A total of 46 guards from House Heartfelt led by Captain Romero keep the peace in the district. Walls surround the area with six towers and three gates leading to The Grand Plaza, Twingates and Goblin Town.

Industry & Trade

Unemployment is high within the district. Those who are able-bodied find work as fieldhands outside the city while others with a skill in a trade put it to use when they can. A soup kitchen operates out of Lady Heartfelt's Hospital and The Chaple supplies lodgings for those who have no home.

Infrastructure

Dominating the skyline within The Hovel is the Chaple. Though very few buildings utilize them several parts of Cardias sewer system run underneath the district. A small plaza can be found by the southwest gate centered around a fountain dedicated to the Lady of Luck. In recent years a hospital has been opened with the aid of Lady Heartfelt in hopes to improve the health of the residents.

Assets

The Hovel is one of the poorer districts of The City of Cardia. Several small businesses can be found here, including Davos Discount Supplies, The Lowarm Smithy, The Lucky Hand, and The Black Jack

Guilds and Factions

The Hovel Council form the main political representation for residents of the district. A number of criminal gangs operate in the area, most notably the Redbrands and Blue Skulls, keeping them in check are Duke Heartfelts guards. The Hundered Hammers Guild also has some members operating within the district.

History

The Hovel was originally a small farming village that supported the town that would become Cardia. As the city grew it eventually absorbed the village. As the population swelled few of the original structures survived as they were replaced with the required housing. As many who could not afford to live in other areas of the city found themselves in The Hovel it gained a reputation as one of the rougher areas of the city with high levels of poverty, however, since Duke Heartfelt took over the area he has aspired to improve the quality of life of its residents.

Architecture

The majority of structures within The Hovel are simple houses made of wood with thatch roofs, or tiles for those that can afford such luxuries. The Chaple stands alone as the only stone structure.
