Sun Shield Abbey

Sun Shield Abbey was a church of Hyperia in the town of Solis. It was the primary building of the worshipers of Hyperia and was destroyed, along with the town of Solis by The Dead Sun Empire.   A number of adventurers went to Sun Shield Abbey to seek aid after being afflicted by a curse. While not always successful, the abbey more often than not resulted favorably.

Purpose / Function

A place of worship and residence for the priests of Hyperia.

Architecture

Sun Shield Abbey was constructed primarily out of adobe blocks dried in the sun. The abbey towered over the rest of the town nearly triple the size of most houses in the area. The indoors were fairly quaint, a number of small murals painted on the walls depicting Hyperia and showing a brief history of the construction of the abbey, as well as blank walls for future stories that never had a chance to be told. The floors consisted of hardwood cut from the local forest. There was eventually plans to get glass blown for windows for the abbey but it never came to be. After a few years the priests enjoyed the unfiltered sunlight that came in everyday and decided to instead craft wooden panels on the outside to keep the elements out.

History

The Sun Shield Abbey was actually older than Solis by a few months. Traveling priests of Hyperia were tempted to build their religious center closer to the rest of civilization, but seeing the division, and still high number of Reus worshipers, decided to distance themselves a bit from the masses. Heading east from what would later become The Kingdom of Brennis, the priests traveled onward and onward before being woken up one morning with the sun shining ever bright on them. After a bit of scouting around, they found a small clearing among the trees that the sun seemed to shine brightest against, and it was there that they decided to build their abbey.      Originally there were just 4 priests of Hyperia, one of which was a former Teller, and all had limited knowledge of construction and architecture. Being unsure of how to work with wood too well, they found the nearby soil was rich with clay and decided to build their own bricks out of adobe. As time passed they would often venture back to civilization for more supplies and tools and spread the word of Hyperia, and after each visit would usually convince at least one person to return to the abbey with them. Overtime the the congregation grew and people started to build their own humble homes around the abbey while still working on it.    From start to finish the Abbey took about 8 years to complete with some minor complications slowing construction down at times. The Abbey was open to the public from sunrise to sunset each day, allowing people to pray to Hyperia, as well as acting as a townhall like structure for Solis.    There was plans to dig up a basement and eventually catacombs overtime but that never came to be.   When the Empire of the Dead Sun launched their invasion of Brennis, Solis was not spared despite being outside of the Kingdom's borders. The priests were slain and three elven residents were turned into vampire spawn and crucified. The forest surrounding the town was burned and the ground salted to prevent growth from ever happening again in the area. The other residents were forced to witness all of this, as well as the abbey's destruction. They were then branded and forced west to warn the rest of Brennis on what was coming for them shortly.     A group of people later found the abbey destroyed and were attacked by the vampires that had been kept there to guard the place. This included Lilith and Erebus Brennis.

Tourism

Followers of Hyperia would stop here often if they were not residents of Solis. Even outsider traders and travelers who stopped in Solis would often visit the Abbey.
