Cats of Chinkapin

All cats in Chinkapin County occupy a privileged status. They are treated with respect by just about everyone. The idea of owning a cat is absurd (though hosting one is fine), and mistreating or even being rude to one is reprehensible. This may be attributable in part to their role in keeping vermin populations down, for the vermin of Chinkapin can be both destructive and magical. In any case, cats are important. Some cats, however, are more important than others. All Chinkapin natives know the names and properties of at least some of the Cats of Chinkapin, even if they haven't ever met one. These legendary Cats appear as and when they choose, and are believed to influence affairs in the county. Nobody worships them, exactly, but nobody will turn down their help, either. It's not clear how long they live (though some have died). Their full number is unknown, but the dozen below are some of the best-known ones. Their nature remains mysterious--are they mere animals? Are they fairies? Are they, as some villagers claim, saints or angels?
Whatever else they may be, they are most certainly cats.
