Strength Drain Condition in Melyria | World Anvil

Strength Drain

Strength Drain is a vicious, but rare disease suffered by some miners of Alagh Caurak. This terrifying condition has inspired several tales and rumours about its origin, purpose and nature, varying from a vicious cure to wrath of the gods. This feebling condition was for many considered to be fatal, yet lately, a spark of hope has been discovered in the form of a possible cure.

Causes

The exact cause of the condition is still debated by the dwarven scholars, but most agree on the development of the disease has something to do with some of the unusual magnetic metals found in the area, near the depth of the Underdark. This rust coloured metal only appears on small patches and doesn't seem to affect all close to them, yet all victims of the disease seem to have interacted with this substance in one way or another.

Symptoms

First symptoms of the Strength Drain include headaches, dizziness, thirst and hunger, which seems to come back soon after one has eaten. The patient will eventually get used to a constant feeling of hunger and eventually lose their appetite entirely, being able to eat only in small proportions.

Patient will start to lose weight rapidly, muscles deteriorating at an alarming rate until the patient is only a husk of themselves. Fainting becomes commonplace, breathing becomes heavy and skin dull and droopy, until the patient, eventually, collapses and dies.

Treatment

Previously, Strength Drain was believed to be fatal, and all treatment for it by nature was put towards making the patient feel more comfortable during their inevitable passing. However, most recently the Olbarak have come up with possible treatment of this vile disease. The treatment method is still on trial and encompasses alchemical components with an arcane ritual known as Lodestone Cleanse, which must be ministered to the patient during several sessions. So far the results have been promising.
