Abjurer Wizard Profession in Melyria | World Anvil

Abjurer Wizard

Character Subclass / Classification

While not the flashiest of them all, magical school of Abjuration has several uses. And while not as feared and respected as Evokers or celebrated as Clerics with their power to heal, even mediocre abjurer will always find work. Aspiring abjurers learn often very quickly that their power will often pale in the shadow of many other casters, but they also know that when true trouble comes, other casters that previously didn't pay them any mind will hurry to request their aid.

Fireball might injure your targets, but it burns both friends and foes alike. Healing can save lives, yet there are only so many hits the body can take before it's unsalvagable. But when Abjurer comes along and does their job well, no injury is taken by the allies, while the foes fall to their own weapons.

That is the art of the Abjurer.

Career

Qualifications

Abjurers focus on understanding the protective properties of The Weave. Through rigorous training or natural talent, wizard puts their time and effort to learn the art of abjuration and put their main focus to their craft.

In-game terms, Abjurer is made by choosing the School of Abjuration as your Wizard subclass in level two.

Career Progression

Like other Wizards, abjurers start as apprentices, often for private mentors or different types of wizarding schools and then specialise into Abjuration. After requiring enough experience, they find themselves fitting jobs, often in security, military or academic circles.

Perception

Purpose

As masters of arcane defense, abjurers are best in jobs where security is involved. They are well suited into military service, or as mercenaries, bodyguards, part of security teams were it for a lab, mine, castle, bank/treasury, or something completely else. Many Abjurers put their craft into making protective items, securing locations as well as shielding themselves, their friends, and possible clients. Sometimes they might even find themselves protecting criminal activity like mob bosses or smugglers.

Abjurers combine their talents with other Schools of Magic to further enhance their capabilities and make themselves even more suitable for different positions. Most common additional magic schools for abjurer to use are:

  • Evocation to combine their capabilities with firepower
  • Illusion to add misdirection to their protective tactics
  • Transmutation to add buffs and debuffs to their repertoire
  • Divination to better predict possible incoming danger with sensing and mindreading capabilities

Social Status

From all the Schools of Magic, Abjuration is probably most situational and least flashy, making it hard to use to make demonstrations of power. For this reason, it's usage and purpose can be hard to understand for uninitiated. However, Abjurers are very respected by professionals and those more versed in the use of magic in battle.

In military cultures that prefer defensive tactics, like among Dwarfs, abjurers get far more recognized. They are often also well appreciated in noble courts and high-security organizations.
