Helidron

Far to the north, in the tundra region bordering Brinn and Ordnir, a large beast can often be seen in the distance, traveling in herds. This beast, the large helidron, roams the far north where its size and numbers aid it in staving off the attacks of predators. for those predators willing risk the encounter, the heildron are ready to answer with tusk and claw.   The helidron is a strange looking beast, resembling a bear crossed with the size and tusks of a mammoth. Traveling in herds, the otherwise docile creatures become viscous when provoked and deadly in a stampede. They are covered in fur which ranges from brown to a light grey.   Helidron make excellent beasts of burden, and they find service with most of the far northern trading caravans. their size makes them useful at carrying sizeable or heavy loads, and entire family shelters may be placed upon the shoulders of a helidron. When lightly encumbered or not carrying anything at all, helidron are capable of gliding long distances for several hours on end. Nomads are fond of racing their tamed helidron, and the beasts seem to enjoy it as much as their riders. There are rumors of some helidron reaching a size which allows giants to use them as mounts, while this might seem humorous to some, the idea of frost giant heavy cavalry is not something this author wishes to contemplate.   The helidron is believed to be a magically created creature, created in a manner similar to that of the poorly regarded owlbear. The helidron, however, seems to be a far more successful amalgamation that the owlbear and has proved itself useful in many ways in which naturally occurring creatures do not. Attempts to import helidron herds into other regions have fared poorly, as the creatures react poorly to warmer climes.
