In a world of magic and monsters one Empire rose from the darkness to bring order to the world. The Istaran Empire, as old as civilization itself rose to power under the guidance of their Immortal Emperor, Gilgamesh of the Gilded Scales. The legends say he wandered into a tribe of High Elves and taught them the very essence of magic, allowing them to create great works of architecture and art simply by willing it into being, manipulating the very fabric of reality itself by drawing on the power of chaotic energy and bending it to one's will. Before long an Empire rose and built on the conquest of the kingdoms and tribes around it. The Empire exists on this cycle of conquest and governance to this day, and in their 5,000 year history they have not had a single day of peace.   Where the Legion Conquers the Guild keeps the peace both lead by powerful mages and war clerics serving the vast pantheon that has grown in the Ishtaran Empire. It was the Guild, created by Gilgamesh's blood brother Enkidu, that set forth the law of cultural freedom allowing any land that bends the knee to keep their identity and become free citizens and keep their Gods and temples so long as they pay tribute to the Empire through taxation of service. The Guild, took on the heavy task of keeping the peace and insuring law and order reigned supreme in the Istaran Empire.   War is chaos however, and the void of chaos demands to be filled, thus enters mercenaries. Whether it was a squad of Legionnaires not ready to stop the fight after retirement, disgraced Guild members, or adventurers looking for a steady supply of work, the Ishtaran Empire relies as much on licensed mercenaries as it does on the Legion and Guild. Mercenaries have proven their worth by lightening the ungodly workload that floods in from all corners of the Empire.   The world of Meletlac is wide and varied, the Ishtaran Empire, though vast, only spans a small portion of the world. And even in that small corner of the world many races exist with their own forms of government, ideals, and beliefs. It's a big world out there and your journey is just beginning.
