The Medallion of Winter and the Flakes of Traldar

The story of the creation of Medallion of Winter and its separation into the Flakes of Traldar is described in the Traladaran myth The making of the Medallion of Winter and the destruction of the BeastMen.   In summary:   Halav, Petra and Zirchev were trapped by BeastMen, and in desparation Petra and Zirchev between them created a magical artefact out of a snowflake and a gemstone which enabled the three to mire down and destroy the BeastMan army and slip away.   To prevent the power being misused, they broke up the Medallion into the 6 individual Flakes and scattered them. The legend has it that when disaster faces the land again, the Flakes will come to light and can be brought together to form the Medallion again.   It is rumoured that a flake has recently been discovered...

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Flake of Traldar

Magical artefact, legendary (requires attunement)   This item looks like a section of a snowflake and feels like an icicle. You must be attuned to the flake to use it.   The flake has 7 charges, which are used to fuel the spells within it. With the flake in hand, you can use your action to cast one of the following spells from the flake, even if you are incapable of casting spells:
  • ray of frost (at will, or 1 charge to cast at 5th level; +5 to hit with ranged spell attack)
  • sleet storm (2 charges; spell save DC 15)
  • ice storm (3 charges; spell save DC 15)
No components are required.   The flake regains 1d6 + 1 expended charges each day at dawn. If you expend the flake’s last charge, roll a d20. On a 20, the flake inflicts 1d6 frost damage on the wielder per charge used by the effect. This also inflicts -1 DEX per charge. These do not heal naturally and must be magically healed.

The Medallion of Winter

The exact powers of The Medallion of Winter have been lost in the mists of time. If the legend is to be believed it can bring down blizzards and create walls of ice. It may have other powers, but probably only someone close enough to attune to it will be able to discover these.   Update: recent anecdotal evidence suggests it may have specific powers against certain other-worldy beings:
Etienne took the two winter flakes found so far. He magically filled in the gaps to make them into the whole snowflake and held it up in front of them. It started to spin, throwing out magical snowy sparks which enveloped the group. When things cleared again they found themselves in a basement.   A flaming black sphere spitting out sparks was in the centre of the room, and the repaired snowflake continued to spin between the group and the sphere, throwing icy lines of force at the sphere. The sphere's flames started to die and it seemed to be shrinking in on itself, when whatever magic Etienne had used to fill in the gaps in the snowflakes ran out and the four spectral flakes winked out. The sphere was ejected up through the ceiling like an orange pip squeezed between fingers, trailing flame and darkness as it went and followed by a fountain of snow from the flakes.
