Dragonbone Wastes

The continent-spanning plateau north of Medina, the Dragonbone Wastes are home to arid steppes, putrid swamps and frigid mountains. The continent is separated from Medina by the Kriggahav sea, except for a narrow landbridge that connects it to the country of Arvaine.   Life is hard in the wastes, noxious fumes, earthquakes and volcanic activity are constant dangers. Still, many different races live here. It is the ancestral homeland of the dragonborn, as well as host to humans, orcs, and other races that can withstand the harsh environment. True to its name, the landscape is littered with the ancient bones of dragon and giantkind. A silent testament to a war that raged thousands of years ago, and that never fully came to a close.   There are no true nations in the dragonbone wastes, for dominion over the continent lies not in mortal hands, it belongs to the storms. Magic-infused tempests regularly cross through the wastes, leaving destruction in its wake. More than that, the storms sometimes infuse those few that survive its passing with powerful and unstable magic. New types of creatures -although usually dragons- can be spawned from seemingly nothing but the elemental chaos of the storms. These storm-born often clash with their true-born brethren, creating vast conflicts that bring even more destruction to the continent.   The clans of humanoids often find themselves caught between these rivalries of monsters, giving rise to a choice each tribe must make. Stay small, travel light and pray that they avoid the gaze of the territorial tyrants. Or pledge loyalty to one of the powerful Dragonlords or an influential giant tribe. Dedicating themselves to live and die as pawns in the larger races' eternal struggle for territory and prestige, only for the next dragonstorm to cleanse the board and start the game anew.
