Affinity

Affinities are the powers of the denizens of Mayhaos, usually leading into their unique role in the world. While a most affinities are skill-based that can be learned by any race, many are genetic that are only inherited or passed down to those from supernatural origins, godly intervention or gene diversity.   Elemental Affinities are the primary powers that elves are born with, and those who do not have it generally choose to train in a Skill Affinity. Stellar Affinities are available too at birth, or are bestowed upon those chosen or devoted to certain associated gods. Finally, Mutated Affinities are the result of magical corruption or cross-breeding.

History

When elves were united as a singular race, the Ishanelve, their spiritual leaders were the Elementalists. These were the descendants of the mortals who ceased the First Elemental War, a destructive battle for dominance between the four Elemental Gods and Goddesses. They exercised control of all four elements and kept the peace in their communities. When the four siblings became restless and wished to war for superiority over each other again, they made the Ishanelve pick their allegiance. This split the race into four separate tribes, who now only had access to the element associated with the deity they represented, but their abilities were massively enhanced. The Sky Elves were given wings and lightning bolts, Sea Elves could breathe underwater and summon tidal waves, Wood Elves received the power to manipulate trees and command all beasts while Flame Elves had the ability to spread wildfire to which they were invulnerable.   After the conclusion of the Second Elemental War, the four tribes continued as kingdoms in their new respective countries. Their elemental powers remained as a developed genetic trait for following generations, but these divine gifts did weaken over time. Affinities, now as they're called, aren't the world-breaking abilities they once were but are still incredibly powerful and important in Elven societies when properly trained and respected. While all elves have at least one affinity in their DNA, not all of them will develop supernatural powers. Some, or those from outside races, have trained in different fighting, weapon or academic disciplines to make up for their lack of magic. When the different elven kingdoms started to interact and marry between each other again, new genetic affinities were created.   The Goddess of the Sun and the God of the Moon have their own organisations, Paladins and Dreamwalkers, who serve each's respective domain and sometimes war against each other. They both choose many individuals to champion them, usually those not already with a magical affinity. Paladins have traditionally always been Solen but recently have a sect of Dark Elves who have conformed against their dark magic to serve the same god. Dreamwalkers meanwhile consist of Lupo, Green Elves and Highland Dwarves.   A few additional affinities exists, however they are extremely rare and those who possess such powers would be few in number, exclusively chosen and managed by an underground society. The twelfth Creature of Mayhem, Lazarus, trained in the ancient and powerful magic harnessed from the world's ley lines during the Dark War. After the war's end, he founded a secret college to further study the magic, and train new students in the important affinity, to defend Mayhaos against outerworldy threats. A second order exists under the God of Time, who lends some of his powers upon committed mortals to aid him in the near-impossible task of safeguarding Mayhaos' timeline, hidden completely from civilisation. The fifth Creature of Mayhem, Liz'Zet za'Vi, learnt soul magic from an even more elusive order, that no mortal has ever claimed to know of.
