Anima Sola (ɐnimɐ so̞ɭɐ)

Anima Sola

Imprisoned Eternal

In the infinite halls of Piranesum, the prisoners of the gods reside. Porcelain masks hide the shadowy, featureless faces of the forever wandering, through which peer bright, glowing eyes that see little save for the endless abyss of brick and stone and iron. No two prisoners are quite alike - some paint their masks with joyous faces, in an attempt to stave off the reality of their imprisonment. Others carve their masks into cruel visages, to inspire fear into the hearts of friend and foe alike. Still others cast aside their mask entirely, their face a shadowy void, in an attempt to accept their fate. However, all souls in Piranesum are imprisoned eternal, as Anima Sola - avatars of the soul.

Never-Changing Struggle

The prison of the gods is at once eternal and infinite - and impossibly sparse. Miles of prison span every direction, a living, growing superstructure of mortar and metal. Food is scarce. The living are soon to become the dead, and the dead rise as Anima Sola. Some wander alone, in the halls of the endless work of Piranesi, and others form troupes. Some are bandits, scrambling for territory and slitting throats, and others are desperate communes, clinging to the margins and praying to whatever might listen that they will go unnoticed. Yet others fling themselves from the highest heights, hoping that this last death will be their final one. It never is.

Anima Sola Names

Anima Sola usually retain whatever name they had in their past life. Some, however, take advantage of their newfound lease on death, and take on a new identity.

Anima Sola Traits

Avatar of the Soul. The prisoners of Piranesum are not allowed to leave, even in death. Anima Sola are the physical manifestations of a body's metaphysical soul. Anima Sola retain all of the racial traits that they had in life, except those included in Eternal Body.
Eternal Body. Anima Sola are eternal beings, hardened by the walls of the infinite prison. You gain the following benefits:
  • You are immune to non-magical diseases.
  • You don't need to breathe.
  • You don't need sleep, and magic can't put you to sleep. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least four hours in an inactive state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
  • To sustain your body, you must consume food equivalent to your size, but only once every seven days. Failing to do so will cause you to gain one point of exhaustion.
Eternal Imprisonment. Anima Sola are dead, and thus cannot truly be killed. The vessels their souls inhabit can be destroyed, however. When you drop to 0 Hit Points and fail your Death Saving Throws, your body is destroyed, and you fall unconscious. In addition, you are placed under the effects of the Etherealness spell, and begin to drift in a random direction at a rate of 10 feet per round. At the end of 5d10 days, you regain consciousness and your body reforms, placing you at the nearest unoccupied space.
Hollowed Mind. Every time your body is destroyed, make a DC5 Charisma saving throw. The DC for this save rises by 3 every time your body is destroyed, and cannot go higher than 20. On a failed save, your soul is unable to manifest a body, and you remain unconscious and ethereal. At the end of every century following your death, you can make a Charisma save to manifest your body again. Failing this save causes the DC to drop by 1.
