Rel’sidhe Species in Masters of Illuria | World Anvil

Rel’sidhe

Cousins to the Ikroden, the rel’sidhe (pronounced “Rel-She”) are also referred to as ‘planar-touched’ because of their unusual appearance and natural abilities. The rel’sidhe are a chimera species, descended from humans, apollonari, and dragons, with the latter having a strong influence over the species even today.

They are an uncommon sight on many of the former Core Worlds of the old Coalition, such as Illuria. Most rel’sidhe are found on Evermist or the asteroid cities of the Centauri Belt.

Since the rediscovery of a Tesseract Drive, Foldgates and Foldships have opened travel between the former Core Worlds of the old Coalition. This has allowed more rel’sidhe to visit worlds like Illuria or Mandrake ever than before.

Traits of the Bloodline

Rel’sidhe are near-human or near-elven in appearance with the same general physical shape as a humanoid species with both mammalian male and female genders. Where the Ikroden show their draconic heritage in their reptilian physical appearance, in the rel’sidhe it takes the form of horns, small fangs, skin tone and thick, strong tail.

The rel’sidhe have two horns - though one isn’t unheard of - that grow out from either side of their head. Usually this is near the temple region. With a rel’sidhe that has a single horn, it usually grows out the center of their forehead in a unicorn like fashion, not unlike an apollonari.
The horns are a similar shade as the person’s skin tone with a ribbed texture, similar to that of a mountain goat’s horns. These horns aren’t because of their draconic ancestry but to their apollonari, or unicorn-folk, ancestry.

Skin tone and hair color vary with the rel’sidhe as much as it does with humans, elves, dwarves or other humanoid species. This coloration also contains an indigo, blue, red, or green hue. This latter is also a callback to their draconic heritage and related to where the rel’sidhe was born. Green being for temperate climates, red for dry or arid ones, and so on.

Eye color has very little range. Rel’sidhe most often have amber or gold eyes. Some rare instances of sky blue or light gray are possible. Their ears are slightly longer than humans, being almost the shape and the length of elven ears. The difference is that while rel’sidhe ears are elongated they don’t taper to a point, instead, they are rounded.

Their tail, while thick and strong, isn’t prehensile but their tail often conveys the rel’sidhe’s emotional state. When laughing or excited, a rel’sidhe’s tail curls up, while if a rel’sidhe is nervous or anxious, their tail with curl close around one leg. If angry, the end of a rel’sidhe’s tail will snap back and forth.

A Note Rel’Sidhe, Magic and Mana

All rel’sidhe have a strong affinity toward the Universal Energies, also known as ‘magic’. This is a callback to their draconic ancestors who relied heavily on magic for many mundane tasks.

When a rel’sidhe manipulates magical energy, their horns will emanate a soft glow. This glow isn’t always the same color. It differs from person to person and is based on what draconic bloodline has the strongest connection with. The glow colors range from white to gold, red, blue, green and other ancient dragon scale hues.

As a result, many rel’sidhe cultures have taken to using a type of enamel to paint on their horns. The result is that when the horns glow; they form patterns within the glow. This is those cultures form of tattooing.

A second, and more noticeable, ability is the one that the rel’sidhe are most known for and that is to teleport from one place to another. This ‘teleport’ has rules though. A rel’sidhe may only teleport what they can hold or carry. Teleporting an object with them while touching it is the same as literally carrying that object for the rel’sidhe. So large objects often require multiple rel’sidhe to teleport all while touching the object to being teleported.

The rel’sidhe call this teleport ability, ‘dimension stepping’. This is because the rel’sidhe isn’t just vanishing from one place and appearing in another after moving through the magical firmament. They are literally moving between two locations in realspace by temporaroly entering foldspace.

When a rel’sidhe uses their ‘dimension step’ ability, there is always a burst of blue-gray brimstone-like smoke and a sharp pop at the start and end of their trip. They can only ‘step’ to places they can see, or a place they have lived for at least a month, such as their personal home.

Ancestry Traits

When playing a rel’sidhe, the character gains these following special traits.

Draconic Resistance
Thanks to your unusual ancestry you are resistant to certain types of elements or environments, such as intense cold, heat or electricity. You must pick one during character creation from fire, cold, radiation, electricity or poisons. Take a +1 forward when dealing with that element or environment.

Dimension Step
You can teleport to any location you can see in a burst of brimstone smoke, fire and a short pop of noise in the air. When you take someone or something (your gear does not count) with you, it becomes harder.

In those situations, take a -1 forward for every additional person or item beyond one that you can touch and roll.

  • On a 7-9 : You arrive with your passengers, but you don’t feel quite right. Pick two options below that will plague you until you have time to rest at least 3 hours.
  • On a 10+ : You arrive with your passengers as expected.

  • Options
  • Fatigued! That last step really drained you. Take a -1 forward on Maneuver rolls.
  • Dizzy! Your balance is affected. Any combat moves are at a -1 forward.
  • Mana Burn! The strain of trying to Dimension Step was more than you were ready for. Take a -1 forward on any more Dimension Step attempts. Note, this is cumulative if this is selected again.
  • Headache! The step gave you a massive headache. Maybe a migraine that blurred your vision. Take a -1 forward on any rolls involving vision.
