Prophecy of the Split Darkness Myth in Masters of Illuria | World Anvil

Prophecy of the Split Darkness

“When the Red Wolf bites the Green Eye, the righteous will build the bridge of dreams.   Then He who died, yet conquered death, will again rise to threaten what is cherished.   When the dead dagger is made whole, the tri-blade will split the darkness at last by the hand of one immune to time.”
— Enchantress Tryphae Zilom, 3rd Age

Historian’s Note

It’s more complicated than it looks with many layers to it…

The Prophecy of the Split Darkness is one of the more scrutinized prophecies of Tryphae Zilom, the Esk’Je enchantress of the 3rd Age. Noted for her skills at enchantments and alchemy, she’s more remembered for her prophecies, such as this one that many believe foresaw the return of the Lich Lord KILLJOY and his involvement in what became the Final War.

Much evidence exists that correlate between Tryphae’s words and the actual events. The “Red Wolf bites the Green Eye” is agreed to mean one of the rare times the Illuria moon of Morid eclipses Tempis. Likewise, the “bridge of dreams” is thought to correlate to the first successful use of a Tesseract Drive by a portal mage, which happened during an eclipse of Tempis by Morid.

The later lines are problematic and cause the most debate. In the third line, Enchantress Zilom refers to ‘he who died, yet conquered death’ but makes no further distinctions.

Many attribute this to the Lich Lord KILLJOY but history records other such individuals that match such a vague description. The Lich Lord is more recent, however there are others from the vampire count Reglin DeVille to the Minanduin Wastes conqueror known as Kubliek Hun. Then there are the many myths and legends about those who suffered the condition of ‘Timelost’ and could only die through a specific means such as beheading by another Timelost.

Another curious tidbit, the Timelost. Legends indicate they were either long lived or effectively immortal...
— Najah Balgobin, historian

A dagger made whole has been referenced across history. Almost as regularly as the mythical Timelost. Records describe a three bladed dagger, heavily enchanted, that was tasked with lich hunting. Stories from as far as Wizard’s Isle talk about its use against a lich.

No dagger has yet to be found, though many mercenaries and even the Skyfarers continue to search for it today. Historians believe this depiction is actually a misrepresentation of the legend of the shattered sword, Nightrazor.
