Magelock pistol Item in Masters of Illuria | World Anvil

Magelock pistol

Inveted by Philip Webley, a magelock pistol, also referred to as a 'hex pistol', is a modern attempt to recreate Old World plasma pistols. Just like the plasma pistol, the magelock uses a silvered solarium battery. But instead of firing a long plasma beam, the magelock channels the energy through one of a set of crystals in a rotating cylinder. The result is a 'bullet' of energy, lightly enchanted due to the actions of the crystals on the energy from the battery. Once a crystal has been fired, it needs to have a brief cooldown period, so therefore the cylinder rotates to the next crystal in the cylinder.

A typical cylinder for a magelock contains six crystals. The typical crystals sold with a magelock are the deep red dragonspur crystal type that produces a bright, reddish-yellow burst of energy that burns with a tiny explosion on impact. Other crystals are not unheard of that can produce ice, electrical, or even a sonic bolt. No matter what crystal is used, they do eventually wear down from use, until they eventually crack and are unable to properly channel a charge.

All magelocks have a small panel on the right side with a series of alchemy runes. They indicate which crystal 'cartridge' is in use and when a crystal is in need of repair.   Game Mechanics   A typical roll represents the aim of the person holding the hex pistol.   On a 6- using the hex pistol, GM rolls Burnout:

  • 10+ : Warning rune indicates the last crystal used developed a crack.
  • 7-9 : An overcharged crystal blasts out a misfire along with the expected shot. The burst affects either the person holding the pistol or someone nearby, depending on the effect.
  • 6- : The pistol jams due to overuse! All the crystals have overcharged and need to cool down.
