Graf-Skin

Never think about what gets used on you when you're hurt...

The discovery, and reverse design, of a Coalition of Worlds mediglove by the gadgeteer Rick Van Helsing in 810 PC opened the floodgates for many healing advancements by 811 PC. One of these is graf-skin.

A Chance Discovery

Two unlikely discoveries made Graf-skin possible. First was the archeological find by adventurer and gadgeteer, Rick Van Helsing. By his own account, Van Helsing recounts finding a working mediglove in the cockpit of the partially intact remains of a Coalition Rune-Titan.

After his travels over 810 PC, Van Helsing returned to Shildamere City, studying the medical device. Besides drafting a blueprint of the formerly lost runetech device, he uncovered mention of 'graf-skin' and Arscilla Tombflowers in its damaged memory crystals as the start of some mysterious formula. Van Helsing could never recover the full formula.

The devices were reproduced in earnest for many eager clerics and healers. A copy of the memory crystal records found their way to the Skyfarers.

I blame that lunatic technomancer, Gemini Zhan. If he hadn't kept trying to flatten me with that necrotech metal-jack of his, that crystal might not have cracked. I still owe him a punch in the mouth for that.
Richard Henry Van Helsing

Retracing History

It was an expedition led by Doctor Niles Vambena in late 810 PC that found the other half of the puzzle.

Following Van Helsing's account, Dr Vambena led the team that delved through the ancient ARPA ruins still standing since the Final War. Among other fascinating discoveries, Dr Vambena uncovered more of the 'Graf-skin' formula, but not the full recipe.

It was a chance attack by a pack of Mushroom Creepers that provided the last clue. Once the team dispatched the Creepers, Dr Vambena set about using his new mediglove to treat the wounded, especially those affected by deadly Mushroom Creeper bites.

His mediglove helped to treat the wounds, but the glove also registered a necessary compound for 'graf-skin'. Specifically, the slime-like saliva of Mushroom Creepers. Vambena went to work, gathering samples of the saliva, fresh Arscilla Tombflowers and went to work.

The initial mixture did the trick, treating both the bites and Creeper toxin immediately. After the expedition, Vambena continued to refine the formula. A refined version was released to temples and healing guilds in spring of 811 PC.

Manufacturing

From two things that bring death, give life. I love the irony of that.
— Doctor Niles Vambena

Creation of graf-skin is a delicate procedure because of the ingredients involved. Both are toxic, if not lethal, and are each ingredients for several poisons.

Saliva is extracted, or milked, from either Dead Swamp Mushroom Creepers or their Great Northern Swamp cousins. This is combined with the ground Arscilla Tombflower leaves and freshly ground cayenne pepper.

This is mixed with distilled water and treated with healing magics from either a cleric, healing elixir, or rune crystals for half an hour until the mixture becomes a clouded, light blue syrup. The final liquid is then placed in a sealed container to cure for two days.

At the end of those two days, the final liquid is then removed and placed in glass or crystal vials. The graf-skin is applied by pouring or painting the thin blue syrup over a cut, puncture, or similar wound.

Utility

Graf-skin is used to stop bleeding and seal wounds as a liquid bandage. Normally, it cannot counter poisons or toxins. But, because of the ingredients, it counters the venom from a Mushroom Creeper bite and slows the necrotic effects of zombification diseases.

Once in place, the mixture melds with the victim's skin to seal the wound and speed healing. As a side effect, a healing sigil or rune appears over the center of the area as a temporary tattoo.

During the healing process, the graf-skin transmutes itself into a layer of the victim's own skin. The healing process is complete when the healing sigil tattoo has faded.

The idea that graf-skin is created by two very deadly substances is wonderful! It heals using the very things that try to kill a person. Great job! :D

Thanks! I'm *really* hoping more of the upcoming prompts let me flush out more about the background of the substances! :D

Those lunatic technomancers - always causing trouble :D   Awesome stuff, Wolf! :D Worthy of Java!

*raises a cup* Thank you!   And really... I know, right? You just can't take your eyes off those technomancers for a single moment! :D

This is a very useful technology! I love the story of it's discovery :D Is a mediglove a kind of medical device that also got some memory /AI stored in a crystal? Do people farm the mushrooms now?

Thank you! :D   Why, yes! A mediglove is a kind of ancient medical device ( future article pending of course! ) with memory and more inside it. And the Mushroom Creepers... oh yes. However, it's a dangerous profession, after all these Mushrooms have teeth! :D
