The arkanae are the oldest known of the ‘Civilized’, or intelligent, species, even beyond Illuria. Native to Illuria, they are one of the most prominent species across the Worldspace next to such well-known species such as humans, elves, apollonari, and synthoids.

There are accounts of the species in most historical records, even back to the legendary First Age of Illuria. Their origins have been traced back to the Beakspire Mountains, south of the Somerfait Mire in Western Illuria. A small region south of what is now called the Garomen Sea.

History recounts many stories of arkanae coexistence across Illuria, most commonly with humans. So often, in fact, that mixed human-arkanae ancestry is not uncommon.

Today, they are found in all corners of the Worldspace. But most arkanae still prefer climates similar to their ancestral home. Mountains, deep forests, and warm wetlands are the environments they are best suited for.

Physical Appearance

The arkanae are a humanoid species. They are as tall as the average human, with adults standing 5.5 to 6.5 feet tall. They have angular facial features akin to elves along with gracefully pointed ears, but hair type and color is more associated with humans. As for lifespan, the average arkanae lives to about 200 standard years.

Their skin tone comes in various shades of blue to blue-gray, with faded cross-hatched patterns that resemble interconnected armor plates. Similar to the natural armor of an alligator. But for the arkanae, these are not protective but natural color patterns, a holdover from a dim past when the species had natural armor.

But, the most distinctive features would be their four arms, large almond-shape eyes which give them a nearly 180-degree field of view. Also, the arkanae possesses a prehensile, almost scorpion-like tail just without the barb.

While the arkanae have this amazing dexterity and wide angle vision, they suffer a mild case of light sensitivity. In unfiltered daylight, they experience nearsightedness, colorblindness, and mild headaches. To combat this, they wear veils, sunglasses, or sun goggles to see clearly and avoid discomfort.

Food and Diet

The arkanae as a species are an opportunistic carnivore. They do prefer meat when it’s available, deriving most of their nutrition from it. But, when meat is scarce, their diet shifts to include beans, fibrous fruits, and vegetables.
