Smokes Cloudkicker Character in Master of the Wind | World Anvil

Smokes Cloudkicker

Smokes Cloudkicker was a Skyfarer who is famous for three things: Being a master thief that always got away and were good in a brawl, discovering the Basin, and being a fashion icon. Had they only performed one of these three things, no doubt their name had already been forgotten. Thanks to the accumulation of their misdeeds, their name is still known even over seven centuries after their death.

Physical Description

Body Features

There is no clear consensus on Cloudkicker's precise looks. Some stories say they were extremely tall, constantly looming over people. Other stories say they were short but built tough and extremely intimidating, able to pin someone to their spot with a single mad glare. Hair long or short, bald, fancy moustache, long eyebrows, bushy beard, every story has a different description.   Part of this can be explained by the theory that Cloudkicker was a master of disguise, though some suggest other pirates and thieves had their exploits attributed to Cloudkicker, causing all the stories to become a contradictionary amalgamation.

Apparel & Accessories

In many stories, Cloudkicker had three identifying accessories, which are so famous that every few decades they make a partial comeback in current Skyfarer fashion. The first is their large Tricorn hat, thrice as wide as a human head. Second, an incredibly fancy large cape, which some tales claim was a glider used for fancy getaways. Third and last, black leather boots with soles three thumb-widths thick.   Cloudkicker uses a large variation of weaponry in stories, such as a saber, short swords, a bow, bolas, and in some stories even a grappling hook. With many a Master-at-arms using multiple types of weapons, there may very well be truth to all of these stories.

Mental characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

An attempted sorting of Cloudkicker stories suggest that they started as a Sky Pirate as a teenager, overthrowing their Captain for being excessively violent. With the crew split over different ships, Cloudkicker's crew went on to both trade and raid, with Cloudkicker personally often leaving the crew behind for a con or heist. In some tales they rejoined their crew directly after a theft, in others the crew would discover their Captain drunk in a barrel, bar, or on a ship they were raiding.   In their thirties, Cloudkicker fled away from a small armada of ships, straight into the Great Nothing. Following a hunch, they led their crew far into the Great Nothing, eventually discovering the Basin. There the crew resupplied. It is unclear if back then the Basin already had its current population of fruit trees and birds, it might be that Cloudkicker seeded the island to be a better resupply point. They ended up sharing the information on the Basin with some other Sky Pirates, who eagerly used it as a place to hide.   Even now only a few Skyfarers dare travel to the Basin, because a mistake in navigation is likely to lead a ship straight into dangerous storms. However, to those who trust their skills, or are Thread Walkers like Cloudkicker is rumored to have been, the Basin is a very useful shortcut. Those trying to avoid the fleets around the Disk, in need of free supplies, or refusing to pay taxes on special trade routes, all love being able to reduce their travel time to a mere quarter. Their gratitude is part of what keeps Cloudkicker's name so renowned.   According to the tales, Cloudkicker never mellowed out and kept up their piracy. In their fourties they are said to have overthrown several Kingdoms during a large war, though too much history has been lost to be able to verify these claims. In their fifties or sixties, they are said to have sailed into a large storm and never returned, their ship and crew lost forever.

I love the story of Cloudkicker! I also like all the contradictions in the stories about them. This is a very enjoyable read. :)

Perfect combination of a constant loss of written history with someone who had many tall tales told about them. =) And the loss of writing is a recurring theme in this setting, that even those dedicated to preserving it will still have the truth of history slip through their fingers.

I like the story, especially the mystery part. Also, it's like seeing this classical guy jumping from high buildings and vanishing into thin air, :D   But wait, when you wrote: "black leather boots with soles three thumbs thick." you meant the width, right? Not the length? :D

Height, not length or width. Massive platform boots. The better to kick you with.
