Bloodstone
"The material reeks of the ethereal, one can scarcely see the material without experiencing the overwhelming sense that it does not belong in this world."~The Archaeologist
Properties
Material Characteristics
Bloodstone is named for its deep blood-red coloration. The stone itself it somewhat translucent though samples of pure bloodstone are rare and impure samples are often more crystalline and opaque.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Bloodstone is often described as being warm to the touch even after prolonged exposure to a cold environment.
Geology & Geography
Bloodstone is only extracted from the mountain city of Dakura by the Kedolye. Bloodstone is only known to exist at the deepest levels of the city's mines so many believe that the stone could be found anywhere in the world if one dug deep enough.
History & Usage
History
According to Kedolye legend, the first bloodstone was given to their people by Arkan when she intervened to save their peoples from extinction at the hands of the Domi. The Kedolye soon discovered bloodstones in the lowest levels of the mined of Dakura, taking this discovery as a sign that they were to remain in the city to retain Arkan's favor.
Cultural Significance and Usage
The Kedolye consider the stone to be a sacred reminder of their people's deliverance and use the precious few they possess to furnish temples and amulets to Arkan.
Outsiders are known to express unease when in the presence of the stone, claiming that it feels strangely 'wrong' or 'out of place.'
Distribution
Trade & Market
Bloodstones are not commonly traded as the Kedolye view the stones as sacred and others have little desire or use for them. Nevertheless some collectors are willing to pay well to obtain a sample of the rare stone and will often resort to hiring thieves to steal one.
