Session 4 - Noblesse Oblige
General Summary
In compiling funds, Sigisar requested the excrement-filled silver goblet from Kaleb. Narcissa cleaned it with prestidigitation to prevent an enthused Kaleb from drinking from it. Kaleb refused to give the goblet back immediately. When the group returned to town after the failed raid on the castle, the group split into two smaller groups. Narcissa, Kaleb and a sick Manfred went back to the inn. Narcissa paid for multiple days at the inn. Manfred convinced Kaleb to let the dogs be washed with the aid of Silvery Barbs, then put him to sleep with a spell to steal back the goblet. Narcissa attempted to commune with her patron, but was unable to.
Sigisar, Winifred and Edmon went to Swatowitz - site of a nearby church, to request supplies for their crusade to dispel the evil curse upon the land. Brother Bruno, one of the holy men there, agreed to help assemble various items like rations, waterskins, and candles for Sigisar upon request. Sigisar agreed to pay 20 gold and to assist with some digging labor for crop planting that was going on the grounds outside . As Brother Bruno attempted to dissuade the young lord from engaging in dirty work himself, Edmon was his representative in the digging task. He was given a mattock, which, in being untrained, he fumbled and fell with, losing the tool. He became a folk tale protagonist because of it, about the drunken fool who threw the mattock to the next county. Sigisar and Winifred had a heart-to-heart about her magical powers, and she asked for forgiveness for failing to disclose earlier about the old lady with the spindle. Sigisar, being gallant, forgave her without hesitancy. The group were given a wheelbarrow full of many supplies, with some of them, including half-eaten pies straight from the smallfolk’s table, implied this transaction was perhaps compulsory in a mildly unsavory way.
The group at the church returned with the wheelbarrow to meet up with the group still at the Bear's Crown. After the whole party reassembled, a discussion followed about how best to protect the people now that the Markgrave and his guards were indisposed. Both Brother Bruno and Ute had voiced concerns about what would become of the Margrave's subjects now that he had effectively vanished, along with his seat of power. Despite this, Sigisar underlined his reticence to be an administrator instead of a questing knight. The group reviewed the familial connections of its members. The younger brother of Sigisar’s mother, Lothar, was considered to be the most promising candidate, even though there were concerns. On the positive side, he introduced Sigisar to the Holy Order he wished to join, and appears, if nothing else, competent. On the negative side, he is ambitious, or some might even say ruthless, in acquiring new territory, as his has been expanding rapidly for some time. Winifred, meanwhile, has an uncle named Wigand, who was remembered to be little more than a bandit with a castle. Winifred's fiefdom is especially dangerous, as it was remembered there were some folk here rumored who could turn into rats, and the church had been driven away.
During the political discussion, Kaleb wandered off, first digging in someone’s yard, and then into the woods. He was rescued by Narcissa and Winifred, who scolded Manfred for his dereliction of caring for his ward.
The next day, Kaleb was comatose. Manfred tried some simple remedies to rouse him, before going off with Winifred to assemble roots and berries into a rousing paste. Edmon and Sigisar went to go and train the townsfolk to better protect themselves against any trouble that might come their way. Narcissa went looking for and found a wagon. Manfred and Winifred returned, and were able to brew up a paste, when, applied orally, was able to rouse Kaleb. However, he had a seizure, and then threw up. After his seizure, Kaleb became adamant that he must go to Niflheim, the realm of the elves, immediately. Narcissa made an attempt to distract him by taking him into a clearing, and entertaining him with a fake portal, enhanced with showering sparks from Prestidigitation. Winifred and Manfred watched. Kaleb eventually grew frustrated at this fake portal. He made a lot of noise over this incident, which drew a crowd. Manfred browbeat the onlookers by using polysyllabic words and mentioning his university education, and getting them to leave. Eventually, Kaleb grew too insistent that he needed to leave immediately, and began taking Winifred with him in a seemingly random direction. He also implied he might die if he did not. He suggested someone had called him home. Narcissa used her new white raven to summon Sigisar and Edmon, who left the most capable fighters in charge of the new town militia. The group convinced Kaleb that someone might know the way to Niflheim in the nearby city of Brillig, where they had already intended to go anyway to talk to an agent of Lothar.
