The Royal Court

The Royal Court of the Fae Continent is the preeminent governing body, that includes the King or Queen as Head of State and Monarch, legislative and religious advisors, and judicial staff. The Royal Court is responsible for ruling over the entirety of the eight Fae Kingdoms.

Structure

The Royal Court is headed up by the monarch. While this usually is a hereditary position, one does not need to be a legitimate heir to the previous monarch to be eligible, and that monarch, when choosing a successor will often “adopt” a better person for the job, if available. The monarch’s rule is absolute, and monarchs on the continent have ranged from using this power to control the continent with an iron fist (like The Venerable Queen) to essentially rubber stamping the consensus of their advisors (like The Black King). The current Shadow King falls somewhere in the middle.   Below the monarch lies the legislative body which included 32 elected advisors, 4 from each kingdom, that must be from different families (either by blood or marriage) than the ruling families of the kingdoms to try and discourage corruption. The people of the capital’s lands will also elect 4 advisors of their own, and it is traditional that these four advisors come from working-class backgrounds, while the kingdoms tend to elect members from families already close to power. The legislative body and the monarch write all the laws and hand down all decisions to be made about the people. The monarch gets the final say on all of this.   There are also religious advisors to the king that will attend these royal court meetings, each religion is allowed to appoint two standing members to the council, and the two main religions of StarSign and Sacred Flower will always have a contingency of members present. Sometimes other or new religions will surprisingly show up to Festival requesting their two spots on the council. The monarch is required to let them in. Sometimes the monarch will seek special council with the religious advisors.   Lastly comes the Judicial staff, which are responsible for hearing any legal cases that might be taken up against the rule of law passed down by the monarch, any appeals that have gone through a Kingdom’s courts and are now appealed to the royal court, and hearing any cases of conflict between kingdoms.
