The Coral Woods

Along the northern border of the Forever Seas, deep in the Spring Territory, lies the Coral Woods, a towering former barrier reef that has overtaken the land up to a mile offshore, leading to towering "trees" of coral.

Geography

The area of what is called The Coral Woods is really two distinct geographic areas - the great coral barrier reef found along the coast, home to thousands of various types of brightly colored coral and tropical fish that thrive in the clear, warm water.   As the ocean levels receded along the coast, the shallow sandy coastline that had been an underwater reef became a forest that only flooded during the rainy season.  The coral in this area grew tall and slim, instead of fat and wide like its underwater countertop, until they resembled trees that towered over 40ft tall.  The coral in the area has been bleached a light salmon color both by the sun and by how this sun is killing the algae in the coral that turns it all those bright colors. These coral trees are also hardening and becoming more brittle.  And while this area is a scenic marvel and a true wonder, scientists are worried about the continuing lightening of the Coral Woods and both considerable time and research is currently being put into the preservation of this area.

Localized Phenomena

There is a certain magic to the Coral Woods that other surrounding areas cannot claim.  Walking through them is said to bring clarity to the troubled mind.  The skies are clearer here, and storms seem to skirt around the area, only the relaxing winds blowing through the coral branches, sounding much like wind chimes.  There is a local custom of surrounding villages where on one's birthday to majority, they will feed you enough starling liquor to become drunk and have you wander through the Coral Woods, the visions you see within it will bring great knowlege to your future.  Scientists from the capital are not terribly happy with this transition, thinking that young drunk people wandering through the Coral Woods will have the exact opposite effect on their preservation efforts.
