Wadoona Movement

The Wadoona Movement is a relatively recent New Voxelian artistic movement. An adherent to the Wadoona Movement may also be referred to as a 'Wadoonist,' 'Oneironaut,' or 'Dreamspeaker,'

History

The Wadoona Movement was started by a heretofore anonymous artist who, along with his collaborators, executed a set of performance pieces and an alternate reality game known collectively as the Wadoona Experience. These began with the publication of An Exhortation to Wadoona in the 11th of Ikirsten Silkenvault imprint of The Guild Gazette of 9991 AR. This document, among other things, promulgated the use of the fictional/engineered conlang of Wadoona after which the whole project was apparently named. While the Wadoona Experience officially ended in 9993 AR, the influence of the Experience on the creative communities of Voxelia has not abated even nearly a decade on.

Philosophy

While the Wadoona Movement is often percieved to be the antithesis of the Voxelian Idealist Movement's, this is actually not the case. Such an antithetical system would, by the definition of Voxelian Idealism, require a complete rejection of traditional forms. In contrast, Wadoona regards the various traditions of sentient species (including humans among others) to represent different aspects of what might be termed a 'collective unconscious' - a shared set of stories, ideas, and philosophical precepts which underpin sentience as it is known in the Manifold. Wadoona is transgressive against New Voxelian religious norms, however, as it promotes the utility of Epicyclist thought in violation of Church of the Unexpected doctrine.

Visual Arts

To plumb the depths of this collective unconscious, the Wadoona Movement encourages various explorations of both outer and inner spaces to discover the irreducible 'atoms' of thought itself. Dreams and hallucinations are considered important parts of this exploration, as any meaningful bits which burble up from the sea of unconsiousness with their meaningfulness intact must, by their nature, be within the realms of 'accessible thought' for sentient beings. Members of the Wadoona Movement often execute works of art based on these nocturnal journeys and compare notes, looking for similarities among isolated consciousnesses which may indicate the presence of shared 'atomic (as in indivisibile) concepts.'   Wadoonists frequently attempt to directly express abstract concepts (said to be from the 'world of forms') in their work and explore the question of whether or not these concepts have any meaningful physicality to them beyond their effects on people. For example, whereas a Voxelian Idealist might express the concept of heartbreak with a realistic scene wherein a woman is shown weeping over a letter explaining her husband's death on the frontlines of the War of Reunification, a Wadoonist might attempt to paint heartbreak through a series of jarring, colorful assemblages of shapes on canvas which, over the course of the set, become muted and grayscale to symbolize the devitalizing feeling of loss. While some Wadoonist art has realistic elements to it, it is much more prone to abstraction, irreverence, and surrealistic overtones than Voxelian Idealist art.

Architecture

The Wadoona Movement is relatively new in the Manifold and, thus, lacks much of the architectural corpus of Voxelian Idealism. Furthermore, within its home turf of Silkenvault, the somewhat inflexible building codes (see Silkenvault Cipher) have prevented deep penetration of Wadoona architectural stylings into that environment. Nevertheless, Oneironauts have constructed various 'dream locations' throughout Voxelia in smaller outlying communities, including The Vitreous Star in the Silkenvault suburbs. These structures tend to use tapering to create the appearance of being larger-than-life. Interior spaces tend to radiate out from a central nucleus, with rooms and corridors taking increasingly unusual arrangements the further one travels from this nucleus. Wadoonist architecture often features spackled walls painted with single muted colors which vary based on the purpose and environs of the space; often, one is meant to orient oneself within a structure based on the shape of a room and the color of its walls.

Literary & Performing Arts

The critical consensus is that, on some level or another, all Dreamspeaker fiction asks one pivotal question: did this actually happen, or are we experiencing the world of forms? Often, fiction produced by members of the Wadoona Movement creates an air of mystery by representing certain events only in oblique terms, leaving the audience to infer what happened rather than showing them outright. A well-made story in the Wadoonist tradition will use this ambiguity of events to create mystery and, through further dream-like scenes, introduce twists which force the audience to reconsider their interpretations. Films like The Mortal Tourney and Into Violet, with their surreal turns, are said to touch on Wadoonist writing forms despite having predated the movement itself. Even so, there are also many examples of poorly-executed kitsch-Wadoonist stories which try to conceal poorly thought-out plots behind layers of surreal-sounding nonsense.

Music

Wadoonist music, like everything else the movement creates, often has a dreamlike, ethereal quality to it; it is said that the Wadoona Movement's music 'doesn't count' if it doesn't have just a little bit of echo and a softly droning bass or woodwind accompaniment. Back-and-forth string slides and bends are often inserted into the middle of musical phrases where they wouldn't be expected in Voxelian Idealist pieces. Precussion is typically produced through string instruments rather than drums, as the sharp sound of a taught drumskin is considered not to mesh well with the 'smoothness' of spoken or sung Wadoona, though soft base drum sounds are sometimes used to augment a drone. A few musicians working in the tradition have taken to advances in the scientific understanding of sound to create unique mechanical devices - such as adjustable resonators and mechanical re-recording devices - which allow for totally unique sounds to be proudced.
