Julian Pelforth Character in Manifold Sky | World Anvil

Julian Pelforth

Doctor Julian Erman Pelforth, M.D.

Dr. Pelforth's voice crackled over the intercom, echoing through the hallways which radiated out from the atrium like the limbs of a concrete spider. "You must be frightened," he cooed. "I understand. Such a sweeping change to the order of things can be intimidating, at first. We make up all sorts of tales to tell ourselves that things will be alright, to build some sort of solid ground - piety, tradition, nationalism - for our minds to take root of in the face of change. These are the intellectual crutches of a moribund, unenlightened generation. No, we should reach out and grasp the future with both hands!" He paused, if only for a moment, as though revelling in his own wit. "Don't fret now, my sweet subjects," he finally said. "For what it's worth, I think you'll all look positively radiant in verdial foliage..."
— Dr, Pelforth, laying out his agenda to intruders in his hidden research base.
Dr. Julian Pelforth is verdial surgeon specializing in conditions and disorders related to verdialization in general and Caudal lichens symbiotes in particular. While he was somewhat well-known in the Petalcap Vale medical community, he is better known as a fugitive from justice. Profoundly disdainful of those not 'blessed' with a symbiote, he serves the Verdant Order. Dr. Pelforth is a man obsessed with discovering the whereabouts of the Horror Dusk Homunculi and using the knowledge gained from their unique 'gifts' to usher in the age of the Racemic Verdial across the whole of the Manifold Sky setting.

Mental characteristics

Education

Dr. Pelforth was a middling student through his high school years, freqently clashing with students of non-verdial heritage or of lesser monetary means due to his overweaning sense of personal superiorty. It wasn't until his days at Petalcap Vale University that he truly began to excell, dilligently working through his degree in biology and pre-med courses before earning praise in his residency for his near-encyclopedic knowledge of all things Caudal lichen.

Employment

It was during his college days that Pelforth became known to his future connections in the Verdant Order. Pelforth's parents were wealthy industrialists, but they weren't wealthy enough as of yet to be members of that elite club. Still, having grown up around wealth taught Pelforth how to network and measure the trustworthiness of potential partners He quickly found himself rubbing elbows with fellow students whose parents were members and with whom his personal views on the superiority of the verdial race aligned. Later, once out of college and having done some time at the local hospital, Dr. Pelforth used these connections to establish private contracts with fully-fledged members of the Order, becoming a private physician for the moneyed elite.

Morality & Philosophy

Aside from his enormous ego and bigotry towards non-verdials, working for the Verdant Order has allowed Dr. Pelforth to explore avenues of research outside of the purview of ethical review boards. He works constantly to enhance the growth, versatility, infectiousness, and contaigiousness of the Caudal lichen symbiote writ large. Through his connections in the Order, Dr. Pelforth's experimental serums have found their way into the arms of injection drug users, workers at various Order haunts (such as the Bamboo & Brass Resort), and even a few desparate patients who approached him looking for some sort of miracle cure or proceedure for what ails them.   These unethical practices - alongside his penchant for supplying Hand of the Order operatives with harrow, DCStim, and weaponized prosthesis - have put Dr. Pelforth on the Vale Bureau of Justice's most wanted list. He has since fled to the Distal Tesseract rather than face arrest and trial for his crimes. While he is aware that this actions have legal ramifications, he is unrepentant, firmly believing that he will be vindicated in the end; if he can help it, verdials will dominate the world once they become able to make use of the alien Distal sun and life forms in addition to those found in more terrestrial environments.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Dr. Pelforth's connections in the Verdant Order have lent him several priveleges, including the ongoing services of a cadre of Scions Ambidexter. When it became clear that Dr. Pelforth's work would be interupted by the authorities, the Order bribed members of the Navigator's Guild to smuggle the man and his attendants out to an undisclosed location in the Distal Tesseract. While his current whereabouts are unknown, the Order's search for the key to 'verdial racemization' continues apace, and it is now suspected by investigators with the Petalcap Vale Bureau of Justic that Dr. Pelforth is holed up in some hidden research outpost to pursue the work on their behalf.

Hobbies & Pets

Ironically for someone who has little regard for human, Rostran, or ovinex life, Dr. Pelforth does see his experimental animals as his pets. Distal Tesseract of all sorts fascinate the doctor, and one of his side projects involves the taming of Distal urticators and razorback for facility defense. He similarly holds terrestrial mammals 'uplifted' via a Caudal symbiotes in high regard and keeps a verdialized lab rat as a travel companion even when on the run from the law.
