Asbestos Boys Organization in Manifold Sky | World Anvil

Asbestos Boys

The Asbestos Boys are a relatively small gang of isolationist extremists who believe that Petalcap Vale has to 'look out for it's own.' Among other things, the Asbestos Boys were most famously known for conducting a string of burglaries on port warehouses, leading to their eventual clash with Verdant Order members who had financial interests in the port, which in turn led to the grisly Cull of '64.

History

The Asbestos Boys were formed in 9966 AR from a group of rural, religiously-minded Vale Verdial agricultural workers who resented the increasing influence of human and Rostran money in the Vale. The 'Asbestos' portion of the gang's name derives from Forgist thought, as the founding members of the organization met under the tutelage of a particularly 'fire-and-brimstone' Forgemaster; Boys were acting, they thought, in accordance with the Creator's trickster aspect.   While the Asbestos Boys initially sought to show their discontent with the status quo and scare away foreign influences with a string of burglaries against import warehouses, they quickly drew the ire of the Verdant Order by impinging on the latter organization's profits. With the Vale Toil Front stoking the agression of the Boys from afar, this conflict soon escalated into a grisly turf war - known as the Cull of '64 for its violence - which only ended with the arrest of as many Asbestos Boys and Hands of the Order as the Petalcap Vale Bureau of Justice could find.

Disbandment

Though it was initially believed that the Asbestos Boys were almost entirely killed or arrested in the aftermath of the Cull of '64, remnants of the organization still work in the shadows as of 10,000 AR. Isolationism is a somewhat mainstream political opinion among Vale Verdials of a more conservative bent, who look at the violence of the War of Reunification and forsee that the ever-greedy stock human species will not be satisfied with the conquest of only other humans. Those Asbestos Boys savvy enough to avoid the initial law enforcement sweep have either gone to ground in the community, spread to other parts of The Verdial Arc to link up with Classical Verdial holdouts or, in some cases, themselves ascended to (usually local) political offices. In this sense, the Asbestos Boys are not gone - merely canny enough to bide their time and wait for an opportunity to strike against their enemies in more covert ways.

Non-Agression

The Asbestos Boys regard the Vale Toil Front as a threat to hard-won traditional ways of living, but the Front regards the Boys as a useful blunt instrument against the Verdant Order.
