Personal history
Nobody quite knows where Thistle grew up. Elmar Barthen, proprietor of the general goods store in Phandalin , found the child with a hoof-sized head-wound abandoned near a horse while he was living in Neverwinter . Concerned for Thistle, he took him in and took care of him. Thistle had a happy life, helping Barthen with moving his good here and there, and was always quick with a grin.
While travelling to a noble's estate with Barthen, Thistle wandered off while negotiations were being had. Elmar, finishing his negotiations, had a bad feeling as to where the boy had gone, and quickly ran to the stables, once again finding Thistle with multiple new hoof-shaped head-wounds, looking extremely dazed. Getting him home, Elmar decided he needed to be in a less dangerous place if he was really going to be taking care of this boy. Packing up his successful store, Elmar took the boy to the newly re-founded town of Phandalin . There he ensured that there were no horses within easy reach of Thistle, who seemed to have taken a liking to the beasts that absolutely loathed him by comparison.
Thistle now helps Barthen with the transport of goods, moving heavy equipment with ease. Linene Greywind once commented that, "The boy is as strong as a horse!"
Like a lightning bolt, or possibly a horse hoof, Elmar was hit with a revelation. The horses didn't necessarily hate Thistle, they saw him as competition!
