Alendel Settlement in Malkavia | World Anvil

Alendel

"It was once the most beautiful city the sun ever graced with its warmth... and I hated it. But now that it's gone, I'd give anything to have it back."   -Amara Vaxalyn, survivor of the attack on Alendel

Demographics

Alendel is an elven city with the majority of its population being composed of Sun elves.   The remaining population consists of a few lesser types of elves such as moon elves and wood elves, and merchants that have been approved for trade. These merchants are primarily dwarves and halflings.

Government

Alendel was a monarchy ruled by King Theren Faeleth. As one of very few full-elven cities in the world, Alendel was a reminder of times long forgotten, and this was reflected in it's governance. The old ways and laws of the elves were alive and well in Alendel, with a very strict regime focused on order and prosperity of the elven race.

Defences

The flowing, beautiful lines of the city are carried forward to the walls it once used as a defense. The ruined walls still manage to show some of the grandeur of the previous fortifications, although the pristine white stone is now covered in vines. Crumbling towers are still show beautiful frescoes of times long gone by.

Industry & Trade

Magical items created by the arcanists of Alendel were a huge source of income for the city. The wealth was spread throughout the population, and the focus on magical prowess ensured that everyone, even the poorest citizen of Alendel, had a comfortable place to sleep and eat.

Infrastructure

The city of Alendel is the very epitome of a pure elven city. Long winding roads built wide enough for two carriages to pass side by side, however built so that they appear to be natural occurrences. Straight lines are not a thing to expect in Alendel, the very nature of the place seems to reject the notion of straight lines and rigidity. Flowing curves and elegance are the mainstays of elven design, and it was a design they had perfected for generations. Even the basic smithies were built for form, however that is not to say function was not an important consideration. Techniques long lost to the realms of man were used to ensure Alendel was both beautiful and productive.

History

Alendel was one of the longest standing cities on the continent of Altevia. Founded in the ___________ The city stood throughout many wars, catastrophes, and internal struggles. It watched the rise and fall of many cities of the shorter lived races as they grew to waxed and waned in the constant light of the elven city.   The timing of the orcish attack was perfect. A recent undermining of the city's infrastructure via unknown goods coming in from outside entities caused a weakening in the economy, and elves had been slowly trickling away from the city for decades, if not centuries, trying to find their own ways in the world. The standing army, despite being extremely well trained, was but a fraction of what it had been in the past, as an almost unprecedented era of peace allowed the elven warriors to put down their swords, and pick up their stylus. Focused on the furthering of the arts, the elves of Alendel were unprepared for the sudden onslaught of orcs driven forward by an unseen hand.

Architecture

Alabaster buildings lined the streets of Alendel, the elegant houses of the elves seeming to fall like rays of sunlight from the heavens above. Flowing lines could be found everywhere, and sky bridges lead from one house to another in impossibly thin arches. The city was built upwards rather than outwards, as the elves and their lofty goals were foremost in the minds of the architects. Stained glass imbued with arcane energy to provide a soft glow even in the middle of the night allowed the few moon elves in residence to walk unimpeded through the city, basking in its almost otherworldly beauty.
