Leganto City

Leganto City, the second oldest and once largest city of them all, towers of the Legantan continent near the edge of the northwestern Veil. Since the area's occupation around 9,000 PRC, it first acted as a central location for Archons to teach humans culture and magic. Laying within an ancient site of a meteor strike, the land offers fertile ground not just for growth of trees and crops, but below the rocks with minerals and ore galore. This, among the time with Archons and humanoids spent here, made for an easy capital city when the Archons left in 7,000 PRC.   Having a history spanning across the millennia made Leganto City an anchor for all who seek opportunity and order among civilized humanoids. Many humans, having been left by Archons, remained in the fertile crater substituting a nomadic lifestyle of many other races for an established one. Slowly, races heard of a settlement within the crater. Once isolated, the small human settlement expanded to become a multicultural epicenter of the new world.   A vast swatch of Legantan citizens yet still live within the city and it is a common visit for any traveler, despite the Veil inconveniencing travel towards it. As time went on, neighbors began to envy the city's success and Leganto City found itself needing to bolster its defenses creating a gateway for entry through the river and enforcing laws on magic. Now, the city stands tall after years of rebuilding from the Legantan Massacre, but it represents a different purpose than free knowledge. It represents safety and security for all Legantan citizens.

Demographics

There is a dominant lower and middle lower class in Leganto City. Most of the middle to upper class citizens are related to the noble family, noble houses, or dominant a sect of the economy through imports or exports. Species and races vary of all types, but predominantly humans, half elves, and gnomes live here with all other races in the minority. Monstrous humanoids are seen as troublesome and are often given the cold shoulder at many establishments, but Pilaqs (Twilight Elves) receive the sickest of looks from Legantans.

Government

The kingdom is ran by a monarch, the King at the head of all political power in Leganto. The continent was divided into six regions with six Lord Regents who are appointed by the king to represent the best interest of the crown and its people in each region. The Lord Regents work alongside local leaders in individual cities to represent the king's will in those regions and relay the wishes of the people to the King. The city's affairs are left to the Warden of Leganto City. This subordinate of the King and the Lord Regent works to ensure the city remains safe and prosperous.

Defences

Once the Legantan Regiment Pre-Cataclysm, following the Veil only a fraction of their original forces remained so they renamed themselves the Last Regiment: Leganto's standing Army. There is one large entrance into the city controlled by the Last Regiment. The city perimeter, covered in walls in addition to the quarry's natural terrain, is also guarded heavily by Last Regiment Soldiers and magical defenses. The Gilded Tower, along with other colleges across the Legantan Kingdom, all are supplied with funding from the government in exchange for magical techniques and abjuration magic to protect the kingdom's interests. The gigantic bridge allowing entrance into the city may be closed at any time blocking off passage in and out of the city. The quarry itself acts as a moat of mountains surrounding the capital. All citizens pay for the upkeep of security within Leganto with little to no complaint following the Leganto Massacre less than a century ago.

Industry & Trade

The city thrives from its rich soil, ore and minerals, water, and divine terrain. Many believe that the location of Leganto City is a blessed one giving way to its first industry as a divine destination. Many travel to Leganto City on a pilgrimage for whatever Na'kai or belief they carry. The location of Leganto City, atop such fertile ground, also offers fantastic farming grounds, fishing, and mining. This is a majority of the workers here, but many also make a living through small trading and crafting.   Much of the crafting revolved around ships and navigation pre-cataclysm, the Veil making international travel less accessible to the cratered region. However, trade now revolves around mostly goods within the crater, ships still made to navigate throughout Leganto City's water ways. Many find themselves sculptures of metal or stone, farmers of livestock and crops, and fishers. Many others participate in some way, if not as a craftsman or trader, to keep the city alive. Cleaning the streets, maintaining the Last Regiment, storage of foods for the winter, inns and more makeup a vast majority of the remaining occupations around the city.   For those with more zeal for trouble, adventuring groups may have headquarters within Leganto City. Often not filled to the brim with young lads and ladies given their missions elsewhere, adventuring parties form and join guilds for contracts and jobs across Leganto, and some as wide as Malikdar's far reaches.   As for imports, international goods from Caldera and Vernilius are common here, as are goods from local cities within the North Regent. Local continent goods arrive from Port Azure Stand, Lok'Nisa, Harn's End, Old Wallow, Oakcrest, Bellwall, and Snowchill. Of local goods, many of them consist of wood, herbs, spices, crops not locally grown, and leathers given that much of the crater was cleared for farmland given increased populations. Anything grown in a forest or harvested form other biomes can sell for a higher price.

Infrastructure

Leganto City is one of the most technologically advanced cities in Malikdar. It has paved roads, sewers, multi-story buildings, keeps, manors, and bridges alike. The tallest buildings and spire of the Guilded Tower and Castle can be see from above the city's crater walls. The city is built atop a colossal old quarry demanding a large circular city structure flowing outward from the man-made entrance towards Leganto from the southeast. There used to be one headed northwest as well towards an old shoreline, but that has since been closed after the Cataclysm.   The city brings anyone and everyone who wishes to make a name for themselves within the continent, and across the world. It is a major hub for trade giving way to extensive trading guilds. It also houses many nobles as the capital of Leganto investing in aesthetic improvements and conveniences like carriages and smooth roads only a city can offer.

Assets

Leganto City, as a major trading hub across Malikdar, has every type of store available. There are fewer magical items for sale on public markets given the recent restrictions on magic use and magic item creation legislation passed by Leganto City post Leganto City Massacre. There is talk of removing some of those restrictions as Leganto City recovers from the emotional turmoil of the attack, but items for purchase are often expensive.

Guilds and Factions

Political factions are present throughout Leganto, some organizations predominately within Leganto City specific to the city alone. The ruling Absolute Monarchy allows for freedom of thought and speech within reason, giving citizens the ability to express issues through the appropriate forum. However, any group that openly presents danger to the kingdom will be immediately disbanded by the Last Regiment. There are some groups with radical sects, but mostly factions gather to discuss opinions all Leganto City related giving the Monarchy a method to hear the thoughts of the masses. Here are major political factions within Leganto City:
  • Arcane Liberalism vs Restrictionism: Since the Age of Discovery, magic was shared for the betterment of all humanoids. As time progressed, around 3,500 PRC, people's greed and envy produced fear for magic among the populace and so restrictionism was born. After the Great Cataclysm, and Legantan Massacre, a great fear for magic grew within the Continent, and the Monarchy supported heavier restrictions on the use of magic. This bred two factions of belief around arcane power, those that believe it should be free for all, and those that think no one but a select few should use it.
  • Leganto Isolationism vs Internationalism: Leganto City, once a beacon of hope for any weary traveler between 6,500-3,500 PRC, it morphed into a location where those that lived there longer, or first, believed that having open gates to all that arrive to them posed a great threat. The Cataclysm and Leganto Massacre only bolstered the isolationist mindset for many Legantans who want nothing to do with foreigners, believing it could bring further ruin to a city still in recovery from its recent destruction. The internationalists seek to let anyone keep the gates open to travelers believing that Leganto City is still a beacon for those that wish to find a land of opportunity.
  • Na'Kai Conservatism vs Progressivism: With representation of the Na'Kai in Leganto City, some believe that it should be strictly interpreted and never disobeyed. Alteration of any words or alternate interpretations are progressive and taint the true "purist" ideals from the conservatives.
  • Monarchy vs Constitutional Monarchy: Many have accepted the monarch currently in power and choose not to question it, but there are those few that seek a constitutional monarchy where powers of the king are subject to checks and balances through a formal constitution. This would also seek to limit the powers of the reagents and nobility throughout Leganto. Most nobles and those with political power laugh off any formal agreements with the people, but some picketing and angry locals murmur about what can be done for the people to gain power.
  • Free Traders vs Protectionism: Leganto City is large enough to produce a great number of goods on its own, but it has imported more and more goods given its abundant wealth. Farmers are especially against importing foods and livestock claiming that Leganto City livestock and crops are plenty, while other protectionists believe that artisans will lose their livelihoods and move out of Leganto City. This is a feud that has drawn substantial political attention in the past 20 yeas.
There are several economic groups within Leganto City that not only act as a focal point for specialists to gather and share, but as a form of checks and balances against the ruling monarchy. It is also a method to keep people vying for greater change and invention among a city with constant dangers around. Traders and artisans are expected to join the guilds within their respective fields within the city, and those that don't often find trouble staying in business long. Here is a list of economic groups within Leganto City:

Natural Resources

The dated meteor strike on Leganto City's current location was a blessing from the gods for three reasons: water, farming, and mining. All three are what effectively created Leganto City among the region's cold mountains. Mining the ore from the meteor is why many miners gravitated towards Leganto City just to work on the invaluable ore. It is not exported in mass, but used in Leganto City to create wonders and metals with unbelievable properties. The water lead to an easy way to travel through the city. With the city erected on stone pillars from underneath, the layers led to sea travel and canals throughout the various quarters to move large amounts of quickly from place to place. The water and minerals within Malikdar's soil also produced the grandest of crops. The land is scarce, well guarded, and rich with nutrients for almost any Legantan and even some other foreign plants.
