Harn's End
Harn's End is one of the older cities of Leganto, coming to be sometime around 4,000 PRC. The first occupants lived here because of the beauty of the valley. It is nestled between two mountain ranges and at the base of a beautiful blue snowmelt fed lake. It has always been revered for how lovely of a place it is to see and live. Its beauty draws plenty of people from all walks of life to call it their home. Inagi is generous with cool breezes in the summer and gentle snows in the winter and Salarus brings smooth sailing to her devotees.
Northern Leganto is marked by five large lakes connected by rivers. Since western Leganto is walled off by the Veil the most efficient way to travel into and out of the Leganto City is the lakes and rivers that connect it to the sea in the east. These waterways connect Leganto City to the outside world and Harn's End connects Leganto City to them. Harn’s End marks the southern-most city in the northern lake region and is the gateway between the lakes and the interior cities and communities of Leganto. It is the easiest way for the cities in the north (Snowchill, Arrowmouth, and The Horned City) to trade with the cities in southern and central Leganto. It is also the first major entry to Leganto for goods that come from northern Vernillius (Equas, Balerno).
Government
The Wards
Harn's End is divided into five wards, or communities within the city. Each Ward is a distinct neighborhood and home to the various business and citizens. One representative from each ward serves on the Prime Council and one member of the Prime Council, the Mayor, serves as the tie-breaker for all council proceedings.
Currently the Mayor of Harn's End is a halfling named Elvias Idos.
Defences
The City Guard
The City Guard patrols the city and puts a stop to any criminal activity. Harn's End typically is low on petty crimes such as vandalism or robbery but has been known to be a nest for higher level criminal activity because of its size, position, and connections.
The Wall
Along the southern end of the city a low wall was constructed many centuries ago. It is a joke among many as the wall stands only about three feet in height and about a foot thick.
Harbor Patrol
Because Harn's End is primarily a port city most of the cities defense resources are allocated to the Harbor Patrol. They are responsible for overseeing certificates of origin for trade goods and making sure that ship manifests are accurate. They are also responsible for responding to any attack by way of the lake and investigating any criminal activity that takes place in The Lakefront Ward.
Industry & Trade
Shipbuilding
Because of its ease of access to water and natural forests Harn's End is a prime location for shipbuilding. They are responsible for the manufacture of approximately 30% of the Legantan ships at sea.
Salt
Echo Break Mine is the largest salt mine in the world making Harn's End the world's premier distributor of salt. The mine employs nearly 80,000 workers in some capacity from miners to merchants.
Fishing
The Dellando Lake is one of the five lakes that makes up the northern lochs. It is an excellent source of fishing for Harn's End and for other areas in the central region of Leganto that do not have easy access to such large bodies of water.
Obsidian
Obsidian is a major export of Harn's End and most citizens have some kind of jewelry or weapons made from obsidian. It is found naturally all through the nearby Emerald Peaks and in the valley surrounding the city.
Tourism
Harn's End is nestled in a lake valley among beautiful forests and mountains making it an ideal location for residents of Leganto City who are looking for a break from the city. It is home to a few posh resturants and bars, a casino, and several small local breweries that benefit from the access from the cold lake water.
Vernilius
Harn's End has more direct trade with Vernilius than most cities in Leganto, because of this there is a major influence of Vernilius goods in the city as well as a pretty large immigrant population making it commonplace to see some of the foreign races to Leganto in Harn's End.
Archaeology
Harn's End has a satellite office for the State Archaeologist, Everard Cortix, because of its central location for several sites of archaeological significance in central and northwestern Leganto.
Infrastructure
Harn's End was not damaged during the Fuman Uprising or during the Great Cataclysm. Because of this much of its infrastructure is older, however through meticulous upkeep by its citizen older hasn't become an indicator of frailty. Harn's End is the major port city of the north. It is far enough south to be spared the intense winters of cities like Snowchill, Arrowmouth or The Horned City.
The Lakefront
Because it is primarily a port city the docks and lakefront of Harn's End is one of the best in the world in terms of ease for merchants and amenities for travelers. It is also home to shipyards and a few docks that are dedicated to those who live in houseboats.
The Lighthouses
Harn's End is home to a large lighthouse on an island two miles into the lake. The lighthouse shines at night and has inspired a network of lighthouses through the city that function as street lamps.
The Sewers
Harn's End was the first city to create a wastewater management system in Malikdar. Clean water is accessible to all its citizens and wastewater is purified and recycled back into the lake. The sewers operate through a series of underground tunnels.
Sun Street
One street in the Fifth Ward provides a perfect view of sunset and sunrise most days. The Fifth Ward is the oldest ward of the city.
Temples, Worship and Memorials
Harn's End is home to a temple for the Deities. Because it is in the Northwest and relies so much on nautical travel there is a special place of reverence for Solarus and Inagi in Harns End.
