Ravin vs Corlis

Guildmaster Ravin Chaar, under the council of Enalis Tavesshir, The Grey Gauntlets' strongest Wizard sanctioned Clairissiana to be used for a high-level guild quest, with Guildchief Corlis Mather.   Corlis had gotten into disputes about low pay, the passing up of worthwhile quests, and the infrequency of promotions within the guild. He was slowly becoming an issue as a growing faction of the guild was already starting to align themselves with him. Something like 25% of the guild found him more favorable than the Guildmaster as a leader.   Corlis and Ravin often butted heads. As did Corlis with other founding members. So when an exceptionally dangerous quest popped up, one that Ravin declined the guild to take, Corlis demanded that they take it, because the pay was good, and they were in the middle of a pay drought as it was.   Corlis argued that using Clairissiana, the guilds Superweapon, and one-woman-army who had completed dozens of missions by herself, the guild could definitely complete the mission. Better yet, Clair was young, naive, and never asked for much pay. They literally could pay her in food, head pats, and attention and she seemed to be fine no matter how much they asked of her.   Ravin thought for a moment to protest, knowing that this mission was different, it was a mission with highly monstrous enemies, ones that would need to be eliminated in order to ensure the safety of the team. But such enemies would typically be beyond the ability level of most members. However, with the advice of Enalis, he refrained from making any comments and allowing Corlis to take Clair on the mission.   The mission ended in a failure. Of the nine members sent alongside Clair, only 2 returned. Corlis was not among them. It turns out, Clairissiana, despite her extraordinary abilities, despite her status as a cosmic being, had a strong, unbreakable aversion to killing. And she opted to render her enemies, monstrous or otherwise, unconscious. This was not communicated to her guildmates, who when circling back around, thought the area Clair had "cleared" would be devoid of enemies.   Much to their horror, the enemies had woken up, and easily slaughtered many of the guild members. When Clair was made aware of this, guild members begged Clair to kill the enemies this time, but she hesitated, incapable of doing so, and again more guild members were slaughtered this time before her eyes.   Before Clair could process what was happening, the remaining guild members, forced her to retreat, dragging her with them from the scene, leaving the corpses of their comrades behind.   Clair was traumatized, her reputation as the guild heroine, tarnished, and Guildmaster Ravin's rival, eliminated. Ravin and Enalis knew all along that Clair was incapable of killing. That's why they sent her on specific missions where this would not be a problem. That's why they never okayed her to go on team missions where this would be required.   When informed of the mission's failure by the two survivors, Ravin wore a somber look on his face, but both members could not shake the notion that he was secretly smiling. This unnerved them, and later that day they resigned.   Clair was tended to by some of the younger guild members who tried to cheer her up and let her know that the failure was not her fault. Yet the young heroine continued to blame herself and her inability to kill.
