Mernea Settlement in Magmoia | World Anvil

Mernea

Mernea is the current pirate capital city in the human dominated nation of Mynari, and has served as such since 1570. The now sprawling metropolis began as a mere trading port town on the northeast coast of the island in the middle of Seaforth Lake. The town was only five years old when its fate would be changed by the wrecking of a famous dreadnaught, The Briny Serpent, at the hands of Cimmeron's First Meteor Strikes in 1565. The Briny Serpent was in mid-flight when the meteors shot it down beyond repair causing it to come crashing down onto a small peak nearby the still small village of Mernea. The survivors of The Serpent settled down in the village, and many Mynarians would continue to do so after making the pilgrimage to pay respects to The Briny Serpent.   The population of Mernea had boomed so large that the Mynari people chose to change the capital of Mynari from Port Kingsford to Mernea. This political change came in the year 1570 and was mainly due to the large amount of Admirals, with crew in tow, that had relocated to Mernea when they weren't out on the open seas. With the large influx of Admirals in Mernea, and its newly designated capital importance, the need of a location that The Armada could hold council was of high importance. A survivor of 1565 suggested that perhaps The Armada could fix the wreckage of The Briny Serpent, and use that as a place to, not only pay respect to the ship, but to hold council meetings away from the bustling part of downtown Mernea. The Armada agreed, The Briny Serpent was restored, and is still the location at which The Admirals of the Armada convene to discuss political matters for, not just Mernea, but all of Mynari.   With the sharp growth in population, the industries within Mynari grew alongside out of necessity. Industry growth was across board in terms of the variety of resources needed to keep up with spike in demand for all services one might need to settle including lumber, masonry, and food. However, the largest growth was seen within the food, fishing, and trade industries. With more people comes more demand for food, and in response the amount of inns and taverns boomed. With the demand for food being so high many fisherman flocked to Mernea to cash in on the new business. Seaforth Lake had already been being used as a fishing resource, but with Mernea being right in the middle of the lake the amount of fishing boats increased. Before Mernea rose to prominence, the southern city of Southcliff was the main trading outpost that the humans used to trade with the dwarves to the west in Worheim. With Mernea's central location within Seaforth it made trading to the west and east more accessible and efficient than the southern shores of Southcliff.   Mernea is often propped up in Mynarian society as a place where anyone can find opportunity to succeed. The resulting demographics of the population, in turn, are very diverse. In terms of economic well being, rich Admirals of The Armada mingle with humble fisherman or pirate crew members on a daily basis. The increase in trade with the dwarves to the west has caused many dwarven merchants to settle in Mernea alongside humans. The diverse amount of races that compose pirate crews also settle in the city when they aren't on the seas. While the mingling of different groups in the streets is very commonplace the actual location of where each individual groups lives is very different. Working class humans settled around the eastern docks and coast of Mernea known simply as The Bazaar. Many dwarven and elven immigrants settled in neighborhoods among one another forming the Dwarven District to the south and the Elven Garden to the southeast, respectively. The earliest Admirals of The Armada and their Lieutenants settled together in the northwest known as Westridge Hill. The most centralized district of the city, where people of all other walks of life from Magmoia reside, called Serpent's Cross.
