Juventius

Once could enter Juventius from four directions. The west gate was Tertius’ chosen, with their carriage following the banks of the river Aponius. Colourful ships filled the waters that flowed softly towards the center of the city, but the eye was naturally drawn to the mansions that lined the edges of the river. Facades soaring up several stories, covered in carved decoration, pillars or statues in little shrines, and boasting balconies with wrought iron overhanging the water, on which brightly adorned ladies sipped iced drinks.

In the distance the walls of the inner city rose, and behind the even greater walls that defended against all manner of enemy. Iowhe imagined he could even spy the towers of the Collegium over the roofs of the villas.

The Kingdom

A rich trade nation built upon Lake Sebolium on the continent of Pascent, Juventius is perhaps the world's wealthiest nation. Through its territory flows the world's great trade ships, plying spices, exotic fabrics, rare gems and the less rare but equally as necessary goods. From the Erewa Isles to the Sura Empire, west to east, the wealth flows and Juventius taxes it all.

Juventius is originally of the Sura culture, though 700 years of divergence has given the nation its own identity and culture and the Juventian people have adapted to the exotic climate of their home continent of Pascent. Magic plays a integral part in the daily of life of Juventius, and one could argue they are the most magical nation in the world.

The neighbouring kingdoms of Atarashi, Caepio, Naeus and Pagius have often vied for control of Juventius and its treasure. Alliances have shifted, broken, been remade, as Juventius struggles to maintain its independence, and each kingdom in turn struggles to lay claim to the riches.

Structure

Juventius is ruled, in theory, by the near absolute whim of the sitting Manirex, his power only limited by the minor powers of the Curia Optimas. Yet rarely has that truly been reflective of the state of affairs. In reality, due to economic influence or control of feudal territories and assets the nobility of the kingdom have significant influence, as do the trade guilds, commanders of the military, and the Collegium of the Arcane.   The Manirex may theoretically impose any rule he wishes, but if the Collegium or military refuse to impose it, it is only empty words. Similarly, the Manirex may wage war but without the economic support of the trade guilds and nobility, he would be doomed to failure.

History

Juventius was founded by Damasus, a noble from the Sura Empire. He funded a risky expedition to escape from the wrath of the Sura Emperor, his half-brother, who saw Damasus as a threat to his throne. The nobleman left his home with his family, political allies, friends and the servants who wished to come with him, and boarded a ship for a new world.   Damasus was the first Suran to set foot on the continent of Pascent, and he settled at the junction of four rivers where the land was fertile. Overtime, the city grew up from the village they founded. The first royal house of Juventius was most correctly House Liburnis of Sura, but they took the name of the House of Damasus, seeking a fresh beginning independent of their home nation. Damasus didn’t formally take the throne until 22 years after founding the city, titling himself only Lord of the City before that point. He was proclaimed king by popular proclamation of the populace in 22YP for his services to the city. He was crowned Manirex as Damasus Elatus (Damaus the Magnificent).
