ten articles from the worldember 2021

-01-Raine Dowd

Neria, Created by Raven Elliot sadly, commenting was not possibe

Inspiration

interesting article inspiration i took from it is that magic isn't always helping, madness from magic.

overal article

well written, short and quite close to real life.

Images

one, fitting to the article

-02- xeiran

Earth-V114-7211RD by einak1ll

Inspiration

Nice article, no carbon lifeform but 'xeiris', a kind of slime.

overal article

Filled in a lot of the species prompts to a solid article. some references should be articles (or stubs) i would refrain from too many "same as humans"

Images

none (sadly)

-03- the amber tavern

Swords, Magic and Lies by RickgoesDM

inspiration

A building in the entrance of a cave/ former mining operations. nice idea!

overal article

a simple direct written piece. i would suggest to write a little more about the building itself. (filling in the prompts)

Images

none (sadly)

-04- die waage des richters

Ah'shi'berö cretaed by T3Dragoon

inspiration

interesting word choice to name the article. (german / friesk) but fitting (kaiser = german title emperor)
It (the article about scales of justice) made me think about the scales and using them as a weapon to actually wield them. I never thought about that.

overal article

Nice and long article explaining the use of the item. it also touches a little about the good versus evil conundrum. well done!

Images

none (sadly)

-05- ammazing

Secret Agent Someone by Wordigirl

inspiration

well written, The article is a short written peice about an organisation we -now- take for granted. Interesting: a public agenda... which makes me wonder. is there an hidden agenda?

overal article

short, to the point and now i am curious to the world itself :-) so well done.

Images

none

-06- phyraxgia

The Chronicles of Evalaw by ChroniclesofEvalaw

inspiration

Where to start!. Its a very very well written piece about a geographical region and subregions, areas etc.

overal article

Excellent piece of work! A long, highly informative article. If it wasn't such a beautiful page in total i might suggest breaking the page up in even more separate articles.

Images

images by Jonas de Ro. His images are very inspirational. Really nice!

-07- fehu

Świat nowej ery by Vizor1099

Inspiration

euhm. yeah. none. i could not read it. so i'll select another article.

overal article

polish language i guess?

Images

-08- aether

Aquatica Homebrew by Pookas Kreations

Inspiration

Using a material -gas- as lifeforce, that makes you think that someone is watching over your shoulder

overal article

short and funny.

Images

one, white, with very vague letters AE. The white is a little distracting. (faint blue letters on transparent background would be more appropriate.

-09- once more with filking

Game of Tomes by SableAradia (& Friends)

Inspiration

The article is a showing a list of filkin (funny covers) of exisiting tracks that SableAradia has recorded with her friends. a fun endeavour to do with friends and if you follow WorldAnvil on their weekly twitch show you will know that they also have their little moments of song.

overal article

As you might expect from a professional in the writing business, is the article well pieced together and to the point, no words wasted, well written and beautifull illustrated. What i also like is the choosen font.

Now... i am not allowed to sing by law. too many people object. especially my wife. But it inspired me to think a little more about my world and the music that would be heard in certain regions.

Filkin... maybe one day

the page in total is almost an image and uncluttered. The article image is fitting and the video's are nicely hidden in spoilers. excellent.

-10- the merinian mourning vigil

Neria by Raven Elliot comments disabled

inspiration

a ritual to mourn the dead. This one is simple and has a nice ring to it.

overal article

short, but interesting. I couldnt comment on the article...but it's nicely done.

Images

simple, and adding to mood. i guess that the small stack of stones are the marking the article is talking about.

-07- Het wiel van onfortuin

Ausutu by N.D.

inspiration

nice idea to have a wheel of fortune turning into a myth

overal article

Article written in Dutch (netherlands) which is my native language. So... easy to read and a good replacement for the 07 polish article. This article is a short story about a witches "wheel of un-fortune". A funny idea.

New Years Resolution

besides enjoying life, loving my wife and taking care of two small dogs, having fun with friends, playing online rpg games and writing all kinds of things, i still want to create more entertaining articles and artwork, get more involved into world building, do more with CSS, Daz3d, ProFantasy, Incarnate and Deios, loose a few pounds more (already lost 15kg in past 6 months, yeeh!). and... euh.. pfff. dunno? try to participate in as many worldanvil challenges as i can?

The articles i read to comment about. until i found out that the article needs to be written as world ember thing. Silly me. Well. not a waste of time. the inspiration and fun reading was still there. ;) i just need to speed up a little before the end of januari is there.

1. TREE HOUSES - Gifts Of The Great Tree

SYNTHACROSIA The Tower Of Souls Created By Stormbril

motivation

For this article i was looking about elven housing. How would someone else describe the elven home? do i miss important parts?

overal article

I found this article and the first thing that i found interesting is the map on the right side. Thats an idea i will use for sure. But... i would start with a map or something 'map-ish'. Nothing wrong with the text, but for me its too.. direct.
I like the way the first quote pops out tooltips and lights up the texts. Nice! There is a consistent usage of popup and light-up text. I'm torn between 'cool' and 'too much'. Some things I would like to learn more about (like the hotroot) are explained in text, while they would be excellent in an separate article (and therefore popup).

Images

The images are a good addition and colorwise they fit with the article. i was a tiny little bit dissapointed that clicking on them didnt reveal the whole area.

inspiration

Did the article inspire me? yes. The idea of needing heating in an elven home made me think about that. In my elven world the cobblestone heating (hotroot) would be more a dwarven thing. The banner gives an instant idea of the way it is intended. but again, i didn't like the cobblestone in an elven home. Overall the article is nice.

2. The Sacred Flask - Organisation / Guild

AYN Created by Aevri

motivation

For the second article I am looking for a well written item article. Image placement, color use and what not. "The Sacred Flask". That must be about an magical flask or something for an alchemist! cool! lets get it on!

overal article

Hah. The Sacred Flask. That must be about an magical flask or something for an alchemist! cool! but then... hey wait. its members? the emblem of the organisation? ooh shoot, its not a flask. as soon as i have found out i notice the text above the mixer box in action. "guild, craftsmen". i have been duped. they had me. humpf. the article for the guild is a little disorderly: after structure the first thing is how to join. Then a short piece about the approval and tasks to do. The structure is hidden in the titles and actions, and you need to piece them together.

images

the "mixer box in action", a small but intriguing eyecatcher. i have seen it before (maybe this article?) and it intrigues me. It takes away the attention from the top right image.

Inspiration

it inspired me to stick to the point. (yeah i know, i am bad at that) it also inspired me to think about the overall structure in my world.

3. Kestar Skrill Geree - Important Character (featured article)

Menicea Created by Matthieu A. Weazel

motivation

it's a featured article with a very interesting title

overal article

very nice color use. really nice use of spaces! and very readable. Sparse use of tooltips. (i missed the tooltip on some important words like 'Flood', 'Daygraspians' and 'Saraakians', but thats really a minor thing. It might even be too much.)

images

great images, they add a mood. I would swap the two bird pictures. the second one makes instant clear what the species is

Inspiration

Its a long article and it certainly sparks my imagination. As visitor to this page it (the article) does a good job of raising questions. There is a lot I don't know about this world. The first sense i get is a more evil based article, but in fact it is not. there are several details that i would like to know more about, like the ritual that turns Kestar Skrill into Kestar Skrill Geree. Its a very interesting article and i will investigate more of this world for inspration.

4. Astrology in the Realms - general article

Not Forgotten realms Created by palant

motivation

was looking for astrology articles, and i was puzzled by the russian mix with english.

overal article

besides the mix of cyrillic and english texts it is a well written article about Astrology in Faerûn. i miss some links to written or even unwritten article (stubs). I am suspecting that this is a DM's world for a group of players and not a full fledged worldbuilding project. Maybe one point of notice: the upper part of the article is about astrology (beliefs, meaning and interpretation of constellations) and the bottom part is about astronomy (the physical movementand location of the suns, planets and moons.) I am not fact checking the article details against the "not" forgotten realms. For me it felt like it touches the world of Faerûn a little.

images

aaah? no images... :-(

Inspriation

astrology and astronomy are (to me) always important parts of worldbuilding. the article made me think on worldbuilding versus game-building, and for my world specifically the roles that astrology and astronomy will have. overal the article is not too long, informative but also a little lackluster. If the players are happy: you did a good job.

5. Magic - Physical / Metaphysical Law

MACALGRA Created by XanthussMarduk

motivation

magic! who doen't like that! and searching for worldanvil and magic gave me only this article. (weird google magic i think.)

overal article

straightforward and direct. this is magic, it comes from there and this is how you use it. The how it is used part is 80% of the article. It's not really all about the magic, but more about its users and uses. i like the animus idea and it feels like it should have a article of its own. For me it's the same for Familiars. There are some good ideas in the article, but as a whole it isn't filling the void.

images

no images. i'm depressed.

Inspriation

Magic plays a huge role in my worlds, just like technolgy does. I really need to take care of the differences without overwhelming the reader. The inspiration i got from this article is to really build on a strong foundation of the most basic principles.

6. Earthling Dragons - Species

Delusions of Grandeur Created by Reality Glitch

motivation

Dragons! medium-rare or well done... we will see!

overal article

i loooooove dragons. the good ones, the bad ones, the big ones and the tiny ones. (yeah wushu (will smith), looking at you!) so the article starts with dragons, draco and wham. "a clade in the superclass Hexapoda" .. silence... "a what?" followed by "infraphylum Gnathostomata". That must be the secret hot sauce recipy. for sure. ok. no more jokes. On with the article. The details are interesting, like dragons with six legs, size variations and where they live their lives. and a tiny detail... how they live. poor kobolds.

images

again? take my eyes. i have no need for them anymore ....

Inspriation

The article has a different view of something very well known and there is nothing wrong with that. I try to do the same, although less extreme.

7. Dwarven - Generic Article

The World of Othlorias, 14th of Eleasis, in the 1746th year, of the Fifth Epoch Created by BDubbya

motivation

Dwarven, if yer have elves, and dragons. yer need dwarves too. ... and ale.

overal article

Oh my. a well worked out article. (not sure why it is a generic article and not a species article) here is a nice amount of information on the Dwarven. Good for a players who wants to play a dwarf and has some (meta) knowledge to make an informed decision. Some nice references to other races too. I like the overall article.

images

yes! pics! nice! bring ale! wine! and a boar to eat!

Inspriation

nothing new here, which helped me to realise that you dont have to change things to make a good story. I will keep that in mind when i improve my species articles.

8. Sonos Virens Ulrot - Person

Shadowfire, Created by Ononomad

motivation

While working on my bard article i searched for inspiration and this article is an excellent, well written piece

overal article

Beautiful written, excellent colors and easy to read. The use of popups is limited and informative. i has a little bit of Mozart vs Salieri taste. I love it. The setting (using caves and tunnels as instrument) is a joy to read

images

Excellent pictures. they really add to the style of the article, in color and mood.

Inspriation

It was fun to read. inspires me to look into beethoven, bach, mozart and more for inspiration.

9. The Chief Rabbit - Rank/Title

Game of Tomes Who Will Claim the Iron Tome? by SableAradia

motivation

Game of Tomes.. and well its SableAradia.

overal article

you have to see it with your own eyes. Its a page, not just a page, but a Page. capital Puh. Its filled with texts and fun images. it (the Page, capital Puh, radiates the smell of Literomancy. or carrots.. i'm not sure.

images

yes. many. and funny ones too.

Inspriation

If this page doesn't inspire you in any way, well then you grab a carrot and go worldbuild. Now! for me the page is a motivator to create, re-create and repeat that process. WHy? well the idea of writing for and from an house to make it grow just makes me grin. what kind of animal i would be? in real life i am a (lone) wolf, called dragonman, tank and whatnot. i have been in the navy for a long time. perhaps i would be a turtle, octopus or sea-lion. i dunno. perhaps i am still the wolf.

10. Essebu - Species

Ardras, The Chronicles of Ember Await, Created by James Shaw & Editorial Team heckacentipede

motivation

this race is intriguing and elaborate.

overal article

The article is well written with the Species template. The world is large (if you cionsider the map size) and there are items that could be linked like the "fall of the kingdom of First Men" or the "Elder Council" The article explains the species and their purpose. and as i see it they exist outsiode reality and if they wille ver interact on a more earthly level it will be a miracle and a one time event that aftwerwards still didn't happen.

images

The image right top is an artistic quick impression. i guess that it will be replaced by real artwork. some more small(?)images as artwork throughout the article would make this article stronger.

Inspriation

many different species, and this one is quite cool. very elusive and unseen. so it doesn't feel like a playable race, they are observers of time and space. Cool to have such a entity in a world.
