The Twin Empires

The world's first lux-awakened nation, and still its most powerful state, the Twin Empires was formed by the conquest of the Eastern Roman Empire by the Sassanian Persian Empire in the 5th century CE, and for a time had a total monopoly on lux technology. Its sophistication and grandeur is nearly unmatched, its name alone commanding respect among almost all other peoples. It is also active in the exploration and exploitation of the solar system, with its most notable recent achievement being the successful terraforming of Earth's moon. Its standard language, Imperi, is a mixture between Latin, Greek, and Persian, and many of the older cultural distinctions between the Empire's peoples have disappeared in the past thousand years.

Structure

The Empire is ruled by its three pillars: the Twin Emperors themselves, the magi of the Solar Faith, and the imperial bureaucracy. The Twin Emperors sit above all but are still subject to the laws of the Empire. The Emperors have supreme command over the military and the appointment of provincial governors, the magi have responsibility over lux and the spiritual lives of the citizens, and the bureaucracy runs the hard graft of day to day Empire. Under the Emperors, supreme magis, and ministers are numberless hordes of officers, generals, city governors, priests, clerks, engineers, and officials of all kinds.

Public Agenda

To remain the most powerful among Earth's nations, to use lux for the benefit of all citizens, to bring the worship of the Divine Sun to all corners of the solar system, these are the missions of the Twin Empire, come what may.

History

The Twin Empire was founded as a result of the First Lux War in the 5th century AD, the first time that weaponised lux was used in open battle. The Akademia, the remnant of Plato's Academy, had been expelled from the Eastern Roman Empire as Christianity took hold over the imperial leadership. Having been accepted into the Sassanian Persian Empire, they encountered the secret work of the magi, who had been researching lux for almost a thousand years. The more radical members of the Akademia stole this research, and turned the prototype lux weapons on the Roman legions. The war decapitated the Roman leadership and decimated its legions. But its new masters ruled the Empire with an iron fist, and were hated even by their fellow polytheists. The Sassanians, having woken up to the power of lux, were in no mind to allow this state of affairs to continue, and invaded the Roman Empire with their own lux weapons and devices. The war was devastating but brought the Akademia's cruel reign to an end, and gave the Sassanians control over the entire Eastern Roman Empire, now helpless to resist. To win over their new territories they vowed never to use lux against their subjects and citizens, and this is a vow that has been kept for a thousand years. The Empire has known peace and prosperity unending afterwards, and whilst it long lost its monopoly on lux technology it remains the world's preeminent power. No threat, from the Ambarmanni barbarians to the Tangri Emperor, has ever managed to keep the Empire down, all have been overcome. All shall be overcome.
