How the World was Born

The Book of Haeon

Chapter 1: Eydon

The god Haeon was born when Lurrand was. When the world was born, it was no more than dark land, a cold, vast desert. The world was then not called by any name. This was the world Lurrand in its infancy.   As a new god, Haeon used his world to learn his relationship with it. He created shapes and time. Thus, the sky was born. The shapes that he created were fleeting and unstable, disappearing quickly. He called these shapes "Clouds". Haeon desired to create shapes with more permanence. He created stars, one by one, each larger and brighter than the last. The stars became permanent fixtures in the sky. Then he created the moon. The moon was lumpy and shadowed, but it it was stable. Finally, he created the Sun. So perfect was the shape of the Sun that it glowed with a magnificent light. So perfect was it that it was impossible to look upon, except when obscured by the flawed clouds. When the sun was in the sky, its glory hid all of the stars. Its light shown so bright that it shown upon the moon. In the light of the sun, Haeon saw fit to bring color to the world, to bring glory to the light. The world was then called Eydon, which means "Idea"

Chapter 2: Dordyon

As a child god Haeon created flowers to fill Eydon, each new flower more beautiful than the last. It made him sad to think that the beautiful flowers could not be shared with others. And thus, he created the bugs of the earth, the creatures that crawled. He said to the creatures, "This garden will supply for you your every need. In return, you must be the gardeners for these creations, and hold dominion over them." He then commanded the Sun to shine during the day, and to hide at night, so that the crawling things and his flowers could appreciate the color of the day, and could rest at night. Haeon was perfect and pure, and the world was perfect and pure. This world was then called "Dordyon" which means "Birth".

Chapter 3: Sordon

Haeon looked at every flower, tree, and bug that he had created and said "There is nothing that I have made that I cannot see," and he was proud.   Then Octus, cousin to the spider, approached Haeon and said:   "Behold Haeon, god of the world and the law and the sky, creator of all, you say that you see all, but I submit a challenge to you. I can hide so well that if were I to hide among your flowers, I could never be found, even by you."   And Haeon, the child god, did boast and say "I will surely find you".   So Octus hid, and Haeon searched for him. Haeon searched for him for years, and grew angry. In his impetuous tantrum, he kicked the earth and hit stones, causing great shakes. He wounded the very ground, causing it to bleed. Thus, mountains and valleys were created. In this fit, he wailed and shed bitter tears, his pride becoming wounded. Never had he received a wound before. He tears then filled the valleys between the mountains, and thus the seas were made.   So it came to pass that Octus was never found. And so Haeon said "I curse you Octus, to live in my tears I have shed for this game! Never will you see land again." And Octus was thus renamed Octopus and dwelled in water for eternity. This was the world was then called "Sordon", which means "Shaped".

Chapter 4: Boudon

As an adolescent god, Haeon grew mischievous and adventurous. He took no more satisfaction from creating plants and the creatures that crawled. Instead Haeon created Beasts. He gave beasts tooth and claw and pitted them against each other. When at a time where one beast was unable to be defeated, Haeon saw fit to create an even greater beast. When that beast could not be felled by a tribe of beasts, he created yet another new beast, and then yet another, and so on. Thus, great cats were created, and great dogs, and then the greater waterbeast, and then the tusked mammoths, and all things that eat other things. Then Haeon grew arrogant and said "I will create a thing which even I cannot defeat, nor make any new thing that can best it," and so he created Dragon.   Dragon was created in arrogance and was also proud himself. Dragon gazed on all other things and knew that he would be victorious if he fought them. Dragon said to Haeon "I am the best of your creations. Why do you allow your past creations to exist? They are fit for nothing except to be my food." And so Dragon began to consume the world.   Haeon loved his creations. He ached when he saw Dragon's destruction. Haeon said to dragon "Stop your destruction or I will create something even more terrible than even you," Dragon only laughed. And the world was called "Boudon", which means Bloody.

Chapter 5: Manna-raldon

And Haeon said, "There is no creature more powerful than Dragon that can be created. He consumes everything." And much of the world was destroyed. Haeon said, "If I am unable to create a beast of power that can beat Dragon, I must then create a beast of intelligence." And so he created humans.   Dragon was unafraid of humans. Humans had no teeth or claws. Dragon meant to consume the new humans that Haeon had created.   The humans in their cleverness created tools, but they were still unable to best Dragon, and Dragon filled his stomach with humans.   Then one human said "I will seek Dragon myself."   This man whose name was Fibbrose approached Dragon, and Dragon said to him "I have bested humans and their tools. Do you hope to defeat me by yourself?"   And Fibbrose said to Dragon, "No, I come not to fight you, but to worship you! That who hath created us is a cruel god; he has put us in a world where we are weak to those around us. We are small and insignificant prey. I reject that which created me! As you are the most powerful creature, I shall make you as my god! I shall do as you bid."   Dragon was a proud creature, and desired worship, and so became as a god to Fibbrose. Fibbrose did as Dragon bid and brought Dragon offerings of meat and beautiful stones and ores to please him.   And when Dragon hunted, Fibbrose said to him, "Do not hunt the humans, for they are weak! As you are the most powerful creature in all the land, it would bring glory for you to hunt only the strongest of creatures." Dragon saw wisdom in this, and did not hunt humans.   Fibbrose worshiped Dragon for a year, and Fibbrose shared Dragon's space for this time.   At the time of the darkest night, at the end of a year, Dragon slept.   Fibbrose had taken a branch from the Stonewood tree, the strongest tree that Haeon had made, and used human tools to make it sharp. He worked the branch until it could pierce the tree that it had come from. When the branch was finished, it was the strongest weapon that any human had made.   It came to pass that as Dragon slept, Fibbrose crawled into Dragon's mouth with his Stonewood branch, and drove the stake into Dragon's brain. Thus, Dragon was slain.   As proof of his feat, Fibbrose loosened a tooth from Dragon's mouth and returned to his people.   The people said to Fibbrose, "Why have you returned? You have forsaken Haeon and us by going to Dragon and treating him as your god."   And Fibbrose said "No, I have used our strongest tool, language, to defeat Dragon. I have used words that had no meaning."   And the people said to him "If you can do a thing to Dragon, will you not do the same to us?"   And Fibbrose said "I will not, for you are my kind. Dragon's body lay to be used, and I have left it there for you. Please take it and use it to create tools."   And so the people went and took Dragon's scales and teeth and claws and fashioned them into weapons. With the tooth that was taken by Fibbrose, the first sword was crafted. The sword was called Dragaris, which means "Of the dragon". From that time to the end of his life, Fibbrose was viewed both as a hero for his deeds and as a villain for his false words. Thus, humans split into two tribes.   As humans were created to fight Dragon, and Dragon was no more, humans in their nature turned to fight one another, tribe against tribe. From these two tribes, all other human tribes were thus born.   Thus, human kind brought Tools, Weapons, Lies, and Wars into Lurrand. Even as they fought amongst each other, they gave glory to Haeon.   Haeon observed and was pleased. He gave no favor to any tribe. At this time, the world was called "Manna-raldon" which means "Growth of Humans".

Chapter 6: Mahondyon

As tribes grew apart and traveled and seeded all the continents, humans paired with one another with affection and fondness. Thus, love was created and brought into the world. Humans devoted their lives to those whom they loved, and they thus made one another happy.   Haeon looked upon these pairings and thought "Why should I be envious of these lesser beings? They are not gods. Yet they create happiness simply through having a partner."   And so Haeon created a wife for himself, whose name was Jiri. He loved her well, and shared with her all of his creations. Jiri was beautiful and perfect, and Haeon allowed her to create new things.   Jiri, with her young optimism, created art and music. Seeing humans, she wished to enhance them, and made from them elves. Then she saw fit to create new laws, the laws of Magic, and fairies to govern these laws. All creatures and spirits and magic beasts were thus created by her, and she bestowed her creations with the gift of magic. The world was then called "Mahondyon", which means "Enchanted".

Chapter 7: Aedridon

Haeon loved Jiri the best of all his creations, but as time passed, he grew restless in his contentedness. He found fault in her perfection. To appease himself, he created for himself a second wife, whose name was Davri. He created her in secret to Jiri, and hid her on the other side of the world. While Jiri dwelled in the daylight of the world, Davri dwelled in the night.   Davri said, "Behold, I see your creations that you have created with your true wife, Jiri, and I wish to make such a bond with you. Do you not love me as you love Jiri, as we were created by the same hand?"   And Haeon said "I do," but these words were falsely spoken. He said, "As I am your husband, and I love you, you may create new life to dwell in the night, but you must not touch my favored creations, Humans, nor my first wife's creations, Elves."   Davri was content for only a short while. She created other creatures of intelligence, some short and some tall, in imitation of what had already existed. Haeon came to her in the night and loved her and returned to Jiri by day.   Davri became jealous of Haeon and Jiri. As elves and humans populated the world, Davri said "By night, what Haeon has commanded me is meaningless. These commands are nothing to me." And as her jealousy twisted within her, she created monsters of the night. She created diseases to hinder the spread of the daylight creations. She tainted the first crawling things to carry her diseases and infected those of the light. She took things that dwelt in the daylight and dragged them into the night to make them her own. Bats, which ate diseased bugs, became her servants. They dwelt in groups and flew quietly in the night, and were thought to be harmless by the daylight humans and elves. They were thus made her spies   Davri disobeyed Haeon's command to leave humans and elves as they were. She afflicted them with her feelings, thus affecting them with jealousy and a lust for others. It was through her that humans became disloyal to one another. It is said that only those of strong will and pure heart are able to resist the Davrian spell to be disloyal to their loved ones.   Although Davri had done great harm to the world, humans, elves, and magic still thrived. At this time, Lurrand was called "Aedridon", which means "False Paradise".

Chapter 8: Noctrundon

And so Davri came up with an idea to make humans and elves hers. She created a disease that would affect the dead and turn them into creatures of night. She took her bat and gave it this disease and set it upon the world. The bat bit and scratched at humans in the night to infect them. This touch of death killed many. Those that died of the disease did not rest; their corpses were returned to life as unholy creatures of night. They ate the flesh of their families and drank blood of the living. This was called "Noctrundon", which means "The first true night".

Chapter 9: Lurrand

Now Jiri saw the death of humans and elves through this disease, and she said to Haeon "Behold my love, our creations are being corrupted. They are not as they were created. What have you done to your humans?"   And Haeon said "It is not my doing, but the doing of a vile monster, whose name was Davri. She is responsible, and must be punished."   So Jiri traveled to the night and saw Davri. She saw that Davri was like her, and was created by the same hand that had made her. Jiri's heart was broken, and Davri rejoiced in Jiri's suffering.   Jiri said to Haeon "I see what you have done, you traitorous one! You who I loved more than all, you that created me, you have lied to me and gave me falsehoods. No more will I ever trust thy words." and Jiri forsook her power and went to the world, and became as one of the elves.   So Haeon, with his guilt, went to Davri and said to her "Jiri is no longer my true wife. Now you shall be my true wife. No longer shall you contend with another."   And Davri said unto him, "I do not desire you as a husband. I am as powerful as you! I shall create a beast so terrible that it will destroy all creations made by your hand."   And Haeon, to protect his creations, banished Davri to the world as well, to live among her creations of darkness.   Haeon was thus alone, and much older than he had been when the world was born. He looked upon his world, and the wars he once enjoyed gave him no pleasure. He looked upon his humans and saw them fighting amongst one another. The elves who had once lived among humans separated themselves to live apart from Haeon's creation, as a testament to the deceit that Haeon had committed against Jiri. The warring creatures no longer appealed to him as he remembered the love that he had for Jiri. He wept. Then he swore an oath to the world and said "I have created what is imperfect, but to start over would destroy the creations that my loves have made. These creations are a part of me and a part of my love. Through my powers and flaws, they have become worse. I cannot bare to destroy the creations of my two loves. If they fight with each other, then so it will be."   And so the world was completed as we know it today, and Haeon did not interfere with the world further, which was thus called "Lurrand", which means "whole but imperfect."
