Sunstone Material in Lupine Bay | World Anvil

Sunstone

Sunstone is a vital resource mined by the nomadic Stjarnsraad. The large fleets of ships originally harvested the Sunstone to purify and create fuel for space travel. The efficiency of the stone meant they never needed to harvest much at a time. They originally preferred keeping smaller quantities of the stone because if they did not store it properly, the stones could make a crew sick and possibly die if left unattended.
The nomadic fleets originated from Atlantis. They were once entirely populated by the Elves from Midgard who found the lost city of Atlantis, but after a few generations, many of the Elves did not feel as though they were meant for Atlantis. So, using the Lantean technology, they set off through the galaxy in search of their veritable paradise.
They never intended to be nomadic, but as the generations passed and they intermingled with various civilizations throughout the galaxy, their culture evolved. They still sought the Elven paradise, but they had grown into a new collective altogether. Then, with the advent of Faraday Corp, which needed access to space travel, a new calling found them.
Faraday Corp discovered the use of Sunstone as a fuel and began immediately testing on other applications of the stone. Of course, it proved to be abundantly useful, and they offered generous goods to the nomads in trade for the Sunstone. Indeed, Faraday Corp has plans to extend their own reach to the asteroid belts of the galaxy with fleets and space stations, but the readily available nomads allow too much in cost savings at the moment.
For now the Stjarnsraad survive better than ever before because of the Sunstone trade, though piracy still causes them problems. They try to negotiate for weapons, but Faraday Corp does not trade in arms. At least, not with the nomadic Stjarnsraads.

I'd love to know more about the actual stones - what they look like, their properties, etc.

I meant to do a sidebar with all the statistics, but I admit I was a bit rushed at the end there! I have plans to flesh out a majority of my articles with images and stats, but since you asked:   The raw form of Sunstone is very similar to uncut diamonds in structure and density. The translucent stone has a golden tint and glows with a brilliant yellow halo of light.   Space pirates originally worked the ore into radiant gemstone jewelry, but soon discovered the toxic properties of the stones as entire crews aboard various ships began dying of mysterious ailments.   Now, the ore is processed into short cylindrical rods, encased in shielded canisters made for quick replacement in fuel assemblies onboard space frigates.
