High Night

The High Night is the celebration that marks the end of the year, remembering those that died during it and those that were born during it. Both aspects are represented in the execution of it which includes the telling of stories of people passed and events lived whilst sharing a meal with family and friends. The other representation is the exchanging of gifts to represent the greatest gift of new life. It is custom to show great hospitality to strangers as the High Night is the roughest of times during the Calidorian winter. And as the old Year dies during High Night, with its end the new year begins.

Geschichte

It started as a habit of practicality. During High Night the day stays dark and no natural night comes down from the sky. The Winter has it strongest grip on the land and strangers out in nature can find a death in the harsh weather. So people invited them into their houses, gave them a free stay in their taverns or simply let them eat at their table as to make their travels easier. Over these occasions conversation grew, people exchanged stories some gave gift of thanks to their hosts. Convenience became habit, habit became tradition.

Komponenten und Hilfsmittel

Usually a roasted Noctipig with some Vegetables and Gravy is served for the Meal and either self made Objects and Toys or more valuable Jewelry and Tools are exchanged as gifts. Often the Family carves masks from soft Wood and hangs them outside of their house to scare of ghosts that may rise during the night.
