Crystalflute Gullet Geographic Location in Lukkein | World Anvil

Crystalflute Gullet

One of the greatest and most splendid natural formation so far encountered on our survey of this planet's surface. It's sheer grandeur must be seen in person to be believed.
— Survey report #57

Located in the desert on the far side of the great Wiirmaebraei Mountain Range, at the confluence of a multitude of small subterranean streams and brooks trickling down from the highland slopes lies a deep, wide opening in the ground. Morphologically somewhere between a canyon and a cave whose roof has almost entirely collapsed, the hollow in the earth resembles that of an elongated half-barrel, tapering slightly at both ends. The sides of the canyon are slick and wet where water courses into it an a myriad of falls and cascades, and fluted with pale milky blue crystal growths where the water runs down the thickest and fastest.   Where shining crystal is not visible, the canyon walls are blanketed in thick carpets of moss and hanging vines. A dense canopy of lush tree ferns carpets the bottom of the canyon, enjoying the combination of the humid mist of fresh water and the hot desert sun, forming a verdant oasis in the midst of an inhospitable desert. Small semi-avian and reptilian species of Lukkein can be glimpsed as flashes of bright and vibrant plumage darting through the dense green foliage. Much of the fauna here has been isolated from the rest of the continent for many thousands of years, trapped by the tall, overhanging canyon walls, and few species have yet to be scientifically documented by human explorers.   At sunset during the summer months, sunlight shines down into the canyon at just the right angle to create a dazzling display of rainbows and spray of colour, with light refracted through the mist of cascading water and reflected by the crystal fluting.
