Coronation of Sörel

The Coronation of Sörel is a legend explaining how Sörel the Strategist became King of Panïka.

Summary

After the Battle of the Maniac, Panïka was left with no leader. The former queen, Rämba the Widow enlisted the help of Redyo the Reverent to find a new king. Redyo created a puzzle deemed unsolvable by the general public. The only person who managed to figure it out was Redyo's own student, Sörel.

Historical Basis

Sörel was made king somehow. It is generally believed that the myth is the same as reality, excepting that Redyo never created any puzzle, and Rämba went to Redyo for advice, with Redyo pointing to his student as a worthy successor to Këso the Maniac.

Spread

It's a well-known myth within the Panïk empire. In other lands, it is less common, but still fairly well-known for a myth about a different nation.

Variations & Mutation

The puzzle seems to vary a lot. Some texts just say "a puzzle" and leave it at that. Some have it that Redyo simply played a game of Yembo, a board game invented by Redyo. This would explain Sörel's "strategist" epithet, as Sörel was generally considered a more pacifistic leader.   Some say Redyo designed the game specifically so that Sörel would be the only one to solve it and become king.

In Literature

The Ballad of Sörel by Pezlo the Bard has references to this legend.   The historian Gïfi the Observant wrote about this in his book, Compendium of Panïk History.
