The Shale
Hearts Imprisoned In Stone
The Shale are arcane gargoyles wrought in stone and given life by ancient Hobgoblin sorcerers. They were created to be soldiers and slave masters who kept the lesser races in check, the monstrous right hand of the vile Hobgoblin Empire. Most Shale abhor violence, however, and since their creation the Shale have found a passion for learning, reading, and developing and exploring their own magical talents. Any Shale unwilling to do their master's bidding are put to death in many horrible ways, and those who are not killed will suffer under the Hobgoblin lash as much as any other race.
When a Shale dies an unnatural death, be it from a mortal wound or magical effect, they do not die as we know it. Their blood turns caustic and their bodies slow and begin to petrify, leaving them a grim and eternal monument to the terrible pain and horror of their final moments.
