Port of Saphir Settlement in Lorannis | World Anvil

Port of Saphir

The Port of Saphir is known as the Crown of Mercercle, despite not being the capital. It is the largest city in the entire continent of Lorannis, and the hub of literally every major religion, trade, arcane assembly, etc. The districts are divided up by large walls (most guarded), and they all have gates large enough to crush an elephant that are kept open until the moon rises. After that, you are stuck in whichever district you decided to loiter in.

Different Areas of Saphir

The different districts of Saphir are named after gems in the Mercerlan language, and are called by their names with no suffixes (for instance, if one was called "sapphire," you would say that you travelled "to sapphire," and not "to the sapphire district").
  Rubis
The banking district. Jewelers, silversmiths, and various other craftsmen who make fine items also call this district home.   Diamant
Diamant is the wealthiest district in the city, and it's not easy to get in there. Platine Garrison members guard the few entrances into the area that there is, and they don't allow people who they don't recognize, or who look like they don't belong in that area (this normally comes down to the way they dress). Religious orders may get exceptions to this rule, but it is not often that these benefits are offered.   Amethyste
Technically Amethyste is the plaza in which various fruit trees and berry bushes are planted for the poor to scavenge. There are buckets in the corners that generous patrons can throw their coins into and the clerics of Anwyn, Morwyn, and Tinel have created an enchantment that takes effect when the moonlight hits the plaza's purple-ish stones: they become a 400 square foot sleeping mat and in the once-empty baskets there are now pillows and blankets. These items will disappear if they are taken out of Amethyste or after the sun rises, and the sleeping mats will become stone simultaneously.   On the dark underbelly of the district however, is a complicated network of thieves, fences, drug traffickers, and more sinister types. Most of the poor who loiter in this haven will refuse to acknowledge that this web even exists, though most are well aware (and some even work for the crooks).   Opale
All religious buildings - barring a few specific ones - are housed in Opale. It's a quiet district, since horses and carriages are not allowed within its walls during the day. Opale is the only district whose gates remain open for a few hours at night to allow for cargo to be carried in to the various temples. But once the moon reaches its apex, the gates are closed.   The Port of Saphir is different than most other areas of Mercercle. They are far more diverse both racially and religiously. With that being said, any gods who have temples have a place in Opale. It's also the home of The Great Cathedral, the largest and most important of The Great Church's locations.
  Nacre
Nacre is the actual port. With ships coming into port, delivering cargo, then picking up their return shipment (normally in less than two days), Nacre is a busy place, and the harbormaster has more power than practically anyone else in the city. The only person more powerful is potentially the Council of Six, but they don't meet within Saphir's borders.   Obsidienne
No one lives in Obsidienne. It is the graveyard district, with the poor and those without bodies buried near the entrances and edges. The rich build mausoleums and erect statues in memoriam to their dead. Opale is adjacent to Obsidienne on one side, and the Mormekim of Mormekar's sacristy are the guards, groundskeepers, and stewards of the district. Not even the Garrison patrols the grounds.
