Redstone

The last bastion of civilization in the Reach wasn't always so civilized. Redstone was infamous in centuries past as a violent and impoverished city with an even more violent and impoverished underworld. The city had an abundance of resources, but only for the elite. The oligarchs fought among themselves for power and prestige while everyone else fought for even a scrap of the necessities. Slavery was standard for thousands of years. The people who originally lived in the Red Valley, the Dynene, made up the bulk of the slave population. The conquerors came from Yorath to the North.   The Arvenflow (a river) passes along the Southern edge of the city, but centuries ago Redstone sprawled out from the North and South side of the river. The heart of the city was a great bridge over the river, flanked on each side by a Yorathan fortress. The bridge still stands, but about a century ago disaster transformed the Southern side of the city into a cursed ruin. The Northern side, unable to sprawl into the fertile land which sustained it or into the treacherous mountains, built upward to make room for refugees. The height of the city, it's magical lights, the rust colored stonework (the citadels, acqueducts, and great stone bridge), and the ruined half of the city are its most notable features.   The city now has a constitutional monarchy. Most of Redstone's affairs are handled by elected officials from the city's numerous districts, but security remains the sole domain of the king. The royal family consists of a single man. King Alain Gray drove out the former ruling class and freed the city's slaves over 100 years ago. His armies were made up of refugees from the reach and foreign crusaders who came to defend them. Many of the oligarchs were exiled or killed and noble titles no longer exist. Some influential families remain and although they lost most of their wealth, it hasn't seemed to affect their quality of life.
