Winter Islands

The Winter Islands are a volcanically active island chain far to the north-west of mainland Hebronia. For most of its history, the islands were uninhabited by people, owing to its geographic isolation. In the early 25th century, the islands were finally settled by a tribe of Northmen who exiled themselves from their native Freiklund after receiving 'divine instruction' in the form of dreams.

Geography

Havliatha

Havliatha is the largest and northernmost island, and the first to be settled. The interior is dominated by barren desert caused by lava flow and scarcely anything grows here, however during winter, the desert is covered in a thick sheet of glacier. Several oases can be found next to the rivers that form from the volcanic calderas and permanent glaciers are found along the northern and eastern coasts.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

Before permanent settlement, Havliatha was heavily forested. Over the centuries, the forests have been heavily exploited for use as timber and firewood. The trees mainly consist of birches and aspens, and there is little else besides. Dry shrubs and grass make up the bulk of vegetation, as the poor quality of the soil provides few opportunities for anything else.

Flora

Aside from introduced wildlife in the form of farm animals, there are few land mammals other than rabbits, mice and foxes. The smaller islands are home to colonies of seals and a diverse range of seabirds, including the large petrels.
