Dogs
Descended from wolves who adapted a mutually beneficial relationship with men, dogs have since become one their most faithful companions. Aside from being popular pets, they are employed in a wide variety of roles such as guard duty, pest control, herding and retrieving kills during a hunt. Thousands of years of selective breeding has resulted in many different breeds.

When the land is devastated by war, natural disaster or plague and society collapses, dogs are often the first to adapt to the wilderness. They revert back to the habits of their ancestors, living and hunting in packs and often behaving with great hostility towards perceived threats, including their former masters. A pack of large, starving hounds can prove very dangerous, even to the steeliest of adventurers. Aside from unrivaled aggression and generations of having their hunting instincts honed to perfection by men, their bites can often lead to nasty diseases and could prove fatal if left untreated.
Lifespan
Depends on the breed and size of the dog, though most can live past 10 years.
