Artifacts

Origin

Since the Burning of Souls and the wave of Ei'tarnium that flowed across Lislow, the Lislanders and Talthorians within have tried a myriad of ways, (with varying levels of success) to Imbue, Enchant and Curse everything from weapons to everyday items. Through the ages, they've been called and known under different terminology and categorized in different ways, but now are known generally as 'Artifacts', an umbrella term.
In the beginning, most 'Artifacts' were weapons or things that aided in the early wars, but as most things as the years have gone by and more procedural and refined ways of upgrading, manipulating or enhancing items have been made. Lislanders can now produce more stable and less erratic items that can contain and use massive amounts of power.

Aritfact Types

Relic Artifacts

From the years 1-100 C.B.E, the Lislanders were in the first race for technology, SoulBurning refinement, and any kind of leg up over the Talthorians and the other changing ethnicities. This would range from Imbued or Enchanted weapons and other items to books and scrolls detailing Burning Rituals or detailed aides for Casters. Due to the limited knowledge and precision with Ei'tarnium, many of these items resulted in having severe side effects, larger than predicted outcomes, corrupting influences, and more.
Ones from the earliest eras now are often seen as antiques and sacred relics of bygone times, as they are often unpowered or broken from years of use, but it's not unheard of for them to be repaired or remade.
(The Pieces are not considered Relic Artifacts)

Sacred Artifacts

Since the rise of Being of Power, there has always been their chosen, whether cult, covenant, or champion, and often the patron deity will gift to their people an item, or change one already held dear. Being imbued with a BoP's power generally means they won't depower when their energy has run out unless something has happened to the BoP, but the Artifact's strength and/or downside will reflect the BoP in more ways than expected.

MagiTek

The modern and most commonly used Artifacts. Can be either big or small, nearly anything that requires some sort of magical utility. While mostly based on RuneScribing and Amalgamentation, the bounds and limits of what can be made with what and into what are pushed reguarly.

Utility

Firstly made to be weapons and aides for war, now they can range from very powerful weapons to everyday items of very different make and use depending on the maker and user. While different types have their different downsides, since most of the populace has access to SoulBurning there are many workarounds for them and always a new Artifact being made to solve something SoulBurning can't do.

Manufacturing

Imbuement:

By imbuing one's SoulEnergy into an item, a SoulBurner can imprint or even parts of themselves into it. Commonly used by BoP's and powerful casters as the Imbuement is limited by the Artifact's BurningPool, but will only be dormant and remain somewhat powered until it's BurningPool is refilled.

@Enhancement:

By Casting directly onto the Item, A SoulBurner can give an item Aspects of Elemental Control, Enhancement Buffs, Curses and more. The power and precision of the Enhancement will depend on the user's proficiency and the amount of SoulEnergy given, and once run dry likely crumble into dust.

RuneScribing

Probably the safest, but also (under normal circumstance) the lightest and most common way to make an Artifact. By inscribing a Rune of Power onto an Item, it can be used to make an Item into an Artifact for however long the Rune is Active, and the item won't break when the Runes BurningPool runs dry, but can be refilled. Depending on the Rune, it can be removed, changed, and altered with little to no side-effect.

Amalgamentation:

Not difficult, but dangerous. If a form of Ei'tarnium is merged with a normal material prior to the crafting, the resulting Artifact will naturally refill its BurningPool, have above-average resilience and durability, and be exceptionally adaptable to both further Imbuement and Enhancements, nullifying their limits except under dire circumstance.

There is technically a fifth way of creating an Artifact. The way Dlisn Mount-Carver did. But it's not known to anyone aside from him.

Social Impact

The creation of The Pieces alone changed Lislow forevermore, shifting the tides of war to the Lislander advantage, and it snowballed from there. The entire society shifted from mostly medieval tribalism to thousands of years of a technology and arms race, advancing them wildly faster than they would have otherwise, making different culture and social norms, physical abilities, and even architecture.
Inventor(s)

Unquestionably the original type of Artifacts was made by Dlisn Mount-Carver, with his newfound abilities and connection to magic, in tango with his natural talent at blacksmithing and crafting. He never completed many of them until much later in his life, generally thought to be because through the years he has stated regret over their inception.
Due to his exposure to Qenaztium they were near perfect in make and have yet to be bested in the creation of or in use by the proper wielder, but several new types of Artifact have been made (notably MagiTek) that don't necessarily resemble his original creations nor their inception.

Access & Availability

In the beginning of the Common Burning Era (C.B.E.) an Artifact would have ranged from being a legendary weapon wielded by a hero, or a myth whispered about by fearmongers, but as the years wore on and they became more widely known, so did their creation methods. While none have yet to measure up to the legacy of the Pieces, there are now innumerable of Artifacts available to almost anyone with the right amount of tradeable value.

Complexity
There are generally 4 ways to make an Artifact, and while none of particularly complex, all generally take large amounts of SoulEnergy and knowledge of crafting both the item and the Imbuement/Enhancement/Curse, etc etc etc.
Discovery
While not an uncommon thing to do in the wider universe, due to the lack of Ei'tarnium on Lislow, the very original Artifacts were mere shaman tools and often based in trickery and illusions. Because of that it's general credited to the first proper Artifacts 'The The Pieces' that were created by Dlisn Mount-Carver months after the Burning of Souls.
