Otemus Academy

Purpose / Function

The Otemus Academy was one of first buildings of its size constructed in Xergus and became the central point of government and arcane training in the Essaed Magocracy and all of Rinas. The building houses the Essaed Arcanist Council which governs and manages the kingdom, however, the governmental portion of the build is but relegated to one tower of the Academy.

The Academy itself was created originally for following purposes:

  • Control - a place to maintain the standards of control over those with the ability to channel the arcane through a system of maintaining a status quo through education and training from the very start of an arcanist's life.
  • Identification - identify those who have the ability to use the arcane or forms of the arcane throughout all of Rinas
  • Training - From the earlier age possible educate those arcanists in the arts as well as indoctrinate them into the belief that the powers of the arcane must be control to prevent chaos or the tragedy they lived under while the elves were in power could return.
  • Research - The study of the arcane and to continue to expand arcanist's ability and knowledge of the use and implementation of Aether power.
  • Enforcement - Enforce the rules of law for arcanists and deliver punishment and consequences for those who break them.

Alterations

The Academy's largest alteration has been its growth other the years. Many of the buildings have expanded in size and scope over the years. The Academy started as merely a few towers and some smaller buildings. Over the last few thousand years, the Academy has continued to expand to fulfill its needs as they arose. From the few meager towers and buildings that started the Academy has now altered itself into more of a small town in and of itself. It has had an entire city grow around and sits in the middle of what has become the capital of the Essaed Magocracy.

Architecture

Upon approaching the Academy you are first taken in by the large wide solid stone bridge that spans the canyon separating the Academy from the main part of Xergus. Not a seam can be found on any of the stonework that makes up the bridge, walls, or buildings of the Academy. Arcane flame permanently lights the bridge at equal distance along the railing walls. The architecture of the Academy is breathtaking to first look upon it. Large spired towers reach far into the sky as if trying to touch the stars themselves. After the long journey over Yaltis Bridge, you'll find yourself standing before a pair of great enchanted iron doors standing more than five times taller than your average humanoid. Beyond the gates, the wall stretches for another fifteen meters ended at another set of grand iron gates. In-between the two gates a small building has been built into the wall to accept requests from visitors to the Academy. When these massive gates open they do so by sliding into the walls of the city that they are braced upon, leaving no visible space upon which they vanished. The architecture inside the buildings are often designed with high and wide arches to leave as much space as possible for any purpose the building may fulfill. The highest spires extend to nearly five hundred meters tall and up to two hundred meters wide. The towers are mostly windowless with a few running up the side and a more sustained wrap of windows located around the top floors. Some of the larger towers can also be seen have smaller side towers branching off of them at various heights. The majority of buildings made of stone are constructed with a secret arcane technique that strengthens the stone and has allowed those such stone structures to be built with a seamless design.

The magnitude of the Academy awed me as I saw it for the first time, seeing this place with the eyes of a child was almost beyond belief. How could anything so big exist? As a young boy from a small town, I have never experienced so many buildings, so many people, so much noise in one place at voice it left me frozen in place. A gruff voice behind me stated matter of factly "Move along boy, no time for gawking!"

History

Construction for the Academy began roughly around 7983 AC by Seldimer Essaed and Yaltis Otemus on a large isolated plot of land mostly surround but steep ravines and mountains. Transporting the people and materials required to start building took the pair nearly three years alone. The followed four years the pair along with other arcanists who followed them and their ideals began the research of the seamless construction technique seen in all of the Academy's construction to this day. With the completed technique in hand, the construction of the Academy was finally completed late in the year of 7992 AC. Over the next five years, Seldimer and Otemus establish the Essaed Magocracy, Essaed Arcanist Council and formalized the rules of their city, which would eventually expand to begun a kingdom of its own.

Tourism

Tourism is not a function of the Academy, only those who work for the Academy either as arcanists, students, or support staff such as craftsmen, chefs, service workers are allowed beyond the request office. Otherwise, the majority of the Academy is off-limits to your average citizen on the continent. When first entering there is a denoted building that takes requests from visitors for aid, appeals, or employment.
