After decades of the use of crossbows, everyone was looking for a way to have a more effective projectile with a better range. The solution was to make something that could launch the projectile like an arrow, but with much more force. They found it in gunpowder. That’s where the concept of rifles came to be. They could launch sharp-tipped projectiles almost four times as far as the normal crossbow, and could have more than a single projectile in it at a time.
