The Statues of Winter

Competition of giant snow sculptures.

"Lift and push the snow we do,
lift and push again.
Work and work this brave crew,
move for all ye ken."
-Traditional shoveling song

An Event to Clean the Streets

The origin of this festival is found in the early days of Burim as a way to remove some of the snow from the roads. The city depends heavily on the streets to bring goods into the city during winter making it a matter of life and death to keep the snow off the road. The simple act of shoveling snow and carting out of the city was very boring and soon people were looking for ways to make this necessary task more enjoyable. First, hot drinks began to be served to the laborers. Next, they began to sing shoveling songs. Eventually, people began making things out of the giant piles of snow that were created through this process.

Great Snow Sculptures

Once an activity is started, it is only natural for the people to try, and try, to best their fellow participants. What began as building snowpeople quickly became a contest between increasingly skilled snow builders.
The stories told by the Burm teach that the snow sculptures of the past are not as good as the ones of the present. Though some people remember specific ones from their past very fondly. Since the skill level at the top has become so high, there are different levels at which people can participate. These mighty statues made by the best can replicate the likeness of a specific person or object. Once, a group of builders even recreated an entire house. Another time, a different group build a to-scale snow sculpture of a skyship.
