The Scholar's Two-Shot
A scholarly debate that went too far.
Said and Kudz stood in front of each other so close they could feel the warmth of the other's breath. They turned to be back to back and strode ten paces each of them counting aloud. Upon the tenth step they turned and fired their pistols.
Gunfire is loud but not usually this loud. The crowd that had gathered jumped in fright. One of the combatants screamed. It was over but who won was not immediately clear.
The Dispute
At Jamaira, two scholars were studying blackpowder at the same time. They had been working together until a disagreement about proposed findings led each to do experiments on their own.
Said was working on a gunpowder that used charcoal from the Arshal Willow while Kudz never revealed his mixture. They finished their research and submitted their findings before meeting for a friendly drink.
This friendly drink quickly devolved after a few too many beverages were consumed and the two scholars began yelling at each other. Suddenly, testing their powder was the best way to compare findings and a duel was the best way to test it. This is a prime example of 'Drunk men are dumb but drunk scholars are dumber'.
The Duel
The two gathered their respective blackpowder and their pistols and met in the courtyard, faces still red. A crowd gathered at the commotion and watched the scene play out. It progressed as a normal duel until the triggers were pulled. At the moment the triggers were pulled, the barrel of Said's pistol curled back on itself as it was torn apart by the force, he lost one finger. Kudz' pistol fired but in his drunken state he missed his opponent and put a hole through the hat of a spectator. The Winner
After this experience - some medical treatment and a scolding from the Jamray - the two tested their findings in a controlled environment. Said's mixture proved to be the more effective of the two and won the argument. However, the standard gunpowder used in the present in the one produced by Kudz because most of the weapons aren't of a high enough quality to withstand the more powerful powder. The duel, while not directly influencing the development of blackpowder, is associated with it. One of these powders improved the efficacy of firearms while the other was put toward industrial purposes.Stub Article
