Pandean
Known to the ignorant as two separate species separated by sex, the gruff half-goat the satyr and the beauty of nature the nymph, the pandean is truly one species, a spirit of nature born from the flowers. They are the children of the earth and protectors of the natural world, working to promote progress and innovation while preserving the beauty of the ancient order. They are generally peaceful and are friendly with other folkses.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The pandean is a generally small humanoid with the ears, horns, and tail of a goat. Its hair is often woody or weedy, but the naiad and nereid pandeans have long, flowing hair that is always wet. On an average, their limbs are generally skinny but stable.
Biological Traits
The reason why the ignorant believe the pandean to be two different species is that at first glance, a biologically male pandean and a biologically female pandean are quite different. The satyr is shorter and stockier, with bigger horns and often a goatee. Males are built more for travelling and fighting, which is why you often only see satyrs outside the Valley of Pan. The nymph is slim, tall, and soft, with long hair and small horns, some so small you can hardly see them.
Genetics and Reproduction
Everyone assumes that the phrase "born from the flowers" is only an expression. It is not.
It's believed that only the pandeans themselves know the answer to why and how, but the young caprine species bloom out of the giant flowers found in the Valley of Pan every spring. The phenomenon is not well documented, because pandeans are protective of their flora and their young, thus not letting any outsiders anywhere near the flowers.
Despite their odd birthing, pandeans mysteriously also possess reproductive organs like those of other folkses, thus qualifying themselves as a folk as well. Pandeans often have children with each other, with a gestation period of 215 days. This creates the distinctive kinds of pandeans: "bloomed" and "birthed" pandeans.
Growth Rate & Stages
A pandean matures slower than a human does; in their first thirty or so years, they mature at half the pace. They are fully grown at around forty, and only begin to show signs of greying by 140.
Ecology and Habitats
"To be a pandean is to be one with the flowers."
The only known location pandeans are native to is the hidden away Valley of Pan, where the sun shines harshly and the flowers grow to immense heights. And it is there they thrive.
The naiad and nereid pandeans, always the exceptions, live in the Great and Bright Rivers that border the Valley and the Green Sea off to west respectively. They thrive in water and float better than most but are almost as equally skilled on land.
The pandeans live in a symbiotic relationship with the nature around them. They give help to any life that needs it, tending to plants and animals, and in return the earth treats them well. At least, that is what explanation the pandeans give for their immense luck and connection to earth magic.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Pandeans eat plant-based foods and magic, typically the flowers and vegetation they grow. They are very fond of berries and grapes, and they drink wine like water.
Additional Information
Social Structure
The unnatural birthing of the pandean permits for a rather interesting social structure. The Valley of Pan takes in the recently bloomed as a collective; no bloomed pandean has one or two parents but an entire community that raises it. They all co-exist as some sort of unorganized tribe, without a proper sense of leadership higher than labour organization.
Facial characteristics
Eery round, side-slanted goat eyes. *shivers*
The rest of the pandean's face is humanoid. They bear faerie marks on their cheeks, the indication of their fae origins. Satyrs more often than not sport beards.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They are only native to the Valley of Pan, the hidden Valley nestled between the Avelous mountains, the Great River and the Bright River, though some have traveled to all corners of Limitless.
Civilization and Culture
Relationship Ideals
These funky faeries love love. They regard it as one of nature's greatest gifts and wish to experience it as much as they can. Relationships are generally open and polyamorous, though monagamous pairings are not unheard of.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
The nature melody is a language nature faeries (pandeans, seafolk, lȳtfolk) are born with; the nonverbal understanding of all that is around: the flora, the fauna, the earth, the water, and the wind. Other faeries such as elves and imps are able to learn it, while most other sapients can only dream. There is no script, for nature melody cannot be translated.
Pandeans also know and teach common speech, if only to ensure that if one ever encounters an outsider they are capable of communicating.
Common Dress Code
Pandeans wear simple clothes in nature tones, usually browns and greens with bright accents. (Naiad and nereid pandeans wear blue and silver). They do not wear shoes, as their feet are hardy enough to withstand the roughness of the earth.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Mysterious cryptids, as far as most people know. Some doubt their existence, for they are so rare in the outside world.
They are indifferent to most other sapients, though open to friendship if not threatened. They are, however, absolutely horrified of humans and how they treat others. Why? Have you met a human?
Pandeans in the past few decades have begun reaching out more to advocate for the conservation of nature and beauty, as well as tolerance and knowledge. The response is rather mixed.
